Peter PILVEN (1956- ) Born Ballarat Peter Pilven is acknowledged by his peers for his high level of tacit skills, including throwing, and for his sound technical knowledge of materials.Training with John Gilbert's Edinburgh Pottery from 1972-1975, Pilven trained with Joan Campbell in Fremantle in 1976. In 1977 Peter Pilven obtained a Diploma of Fine Art (Ceramics) from Ballarat College of Advanced Education (now Federation University). The following year he worked with Ian Dowling at Geraldton, WA, and with the Western Australian Aboriginal Education Unit in 1979. Vic WOOD (1939 - 02 October 2020) Born Melbourne, Victoria Vic Wood was an internationally renowned artist, craftsman and teacher from the 1970s. He studied gold and silversmithing, woodturning and cabinet making at Melbourne Teachers' College and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. He was a skilled woodturner who, as a lecturer at Melbourne College of Advanced Education, taught a generation of woodworkers. Best known as a master wood-turner, Vic Wood retired from lecturing in 1983 to become a full-time woodturner. He was a sought after demonstrator and presenter for all kinds of local and international events. His teaching philosophy was simple: ‘share everything, have nothing to hide, and have no secrets; for ultimately it is in giving that you receive’. Vic Wood was a foundation member and inaugural president of the Victorian Woodworkers Association (VWA). In 1923 the Victorian Woodworkers Association announced the establishment of an annual Vic Wood Scholarship. he intent of the award is to promote excellence in woodwork and to engender inclusive and supportive woodworking networks. This painting is one of my key early works incorporating the Baroque dualities of theatrical drama and inner emotional worlds. Interpreting the Baroque subject of the Sacred and the Profane, the swirling diagonal composition of crossed figures, transparent and billowing drapery in contrasting colours and dramatically tense gestures, in this work combine to suggest both religious ecstacy and physical sensuality. The glade is portrayed as white light. It is the open space for the drama. One face gazes ambiguously at the viewer, questioning, whether she is - the willing but (guarded OR mysterious?) seductress the title suggests. Julie Watkins, 2015 Julie WATKINS (1949- ) In 1969 Julie Watkins completed an Associateship Diploma Fine Art-Painting at RMIT, and a Fellowship Diploma of Fine Art-Painting the year after. George JOHNSON (18 August 1926- ) Born Nelson, New Zealand Arrived Australia 1953 George Johnson's formalised abstractions usually feature a pattern of small related geometrical shapes which give life, luminosity and fluidity to forms which might be mechanical and lifeless. Later his forms become become much larger and more architonic. The work of George Johnson debuted at the Herald Outdoor Art Show in 1953. The George Johnson Mural was commissioned by the Ballarat Teachers' College Students' Representative Council in 1965. It was purchased with funds raised by staff and students. At the unveiling of this work at the Ballarat Teachers' College Johnson's work was described at belonging to the "Hard Edged" school of abstract painters who had set themselves far above the mass of abstract painters by the vitality and artistic ability displayed in their work. Of the work John JOhnson said "We are all part of life and are growing and developing in many different ways, the process of development is often taking place without us even being aware of it. In my painting the embryo shapes appear and grow. I have tried to make the mural symbolic of life and growth. I do not thank that anything has been left to chance in the mural. Everything is working, and, I feel, working well. It has balance and harmony - and perhaps discord, as does life - one malfunction or imbalance throws everything out." Inge KING (26 November 1915 – 23 April 2016) Born Berlin, Germany Arrived Australia 1951 Inge King trained as a wood carver and studied at the Berlin Academy (1937-1939), Royal Academy London (1940), and the Glascow School of Art (1941-1843) . She moved to London in 1847 and began carving organic abstract forms in wood and stone. In 1949-50 she went on a study tour to the United States of America where she was inspired to work in metal . Inge King arrived in Australia in 1951 and she completed several large scale public works. Between 1861 and 1875 Inge King lectured at the Institute of Early Childhood Development, Kew. From 1976 to 1987 she lectured in Sculpture at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. She was a founding member of the Ceminal Centre Five group, and she actively lobbied architects, governments and State galleries to include modernist sculptures in their plans and displays. In 1991 Inge King joined the first National Trust of Australia (Victoria) Public Art Committee, advising on public art at risk and worthy of Trust classification. The Australian Women's Art Register describes Inge King as having been at the forefront of developing a non figurative vocabulary in Australian Sculpture. Artist Leonard French said of this work:- "The centre panel suggests a tree of knowledge growing out of a jewelled fish (a spiritual accompaniment is intended), and from the tree birds rise, spreading out through the cloud shapes of the other panels. Hands and figures rise from the earth, reaching for the birds. The left hand panel depicts the journey of figures in a boat, the seeking after or journeying to the source of knowledge. The far right hand panel is the garden, figures in a primitive state, a sort of evolution of figures from a primitive garden (the first garden). Visualization, verbalization, music and dance are tools we have to express a concept. The analysis of an art work is a delicate and sensitive task and great harm can be done in an attempt to become verbal about a form which relies upon elements peculiar to itself for intrinsic meaning." Leonard FRENCH (OBE) (08 October 1928 - 10 January 2017) Born Brunswick, Victoria Died Heathcote, Victoria Known for his enormous dalle de verre (concrete and slab glass) ceiling in the Great Hall of the National Gallery of Victoria Leonard French produced a large body of work throughout his lifetime. French won the Sulman Prize in 1960, and the Blake Prize for Religious Art in 1963 and in 1980. He was also awarded a Harkness Fellowship in 1965. In the Queen's Birthday Honours of June 1968 he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. In early 1959 Leonard French was commissioned by the Ballarat Teachers' College students to paint a mural. The students were responsible for the payment of the work. When unveiled artist George Bush remarked: "the 1959 students have left something not just to 'oooh' and 'ah' at, but something that is thought provoking, arresting and interesting. This work of art keeps something in reserve and draws you to search for deeper meaning behind the splendour of colour. This mural is not one which will not fade the interest of its beholders, but one which will provide intrigue for generations to come." Originally French intended the mural to be five panels, each entitled (left to right) 'the Journey', 'Man', 'The Tree', 'The Earth', 'The Garden'. The finished mural was reduced to four panels with the central tree incorporated into the panels 'Earth' and 'Man'. Ballarat Teachers' College Art lecturer Arch Cuthbertson explained that the artist:- "Aims at evoking emotional flashed, opening doors to simultaneous thinking and feeling. To accomplish this he juxtaposes the threads of conscious and unconscious images, thus effecting a tapestry that allows many points of reference to converge upon his singular images. Whether the colours offer metaphysical sensations or convey a literal meaning will depend upon the breadth and depth of the viewer's experience. Similarly with the bird - we might well ask is it a defiance of gravity, a metaphysical ascension or the elusive winged knowledge? At that time he said:- "You have left behind you on object which will be full of interest to a lot of people. A work of art, so long as it is in existence, is constantly under review. Most of the good things that keep on going are usually to the uninitiated a little worrying. Many of you will be worried by this, because it does not make its message immediately clear.
