This photograph was taken on the day of the school concert c.1908 and is a companion photograph to the one of the "Misses Barry's cantata group". (See registration nos. 1138, 1507, 1625 and 2018-17 - in this photograph, which mostly shows the girls' group, some of the boys can be seen in the background.) The boys are unidentified, although it is believed that the boy in the dark cap (front row) is Eric Nicholls, and other boys may include Horace Ball and Alec Thompson. The teachers are two of the Misses Barry (on RHS and LHS, in light-coloured clothing), and Miss Mary Rankin (in centre, dark dress). Note: An article in the Ballarat 'Courier', 24 August 2001 (copy of article kept with photograph), identifies the Barry sisters as Miss Lena (Helena) Barry on the left, and Miss Gertrude Barry (wearing glasses) on the right. This article also names B. This is a photograph of a group of students of the Orbost Higher Elementary School dressed in costume performing "The Poppy Song:" on a stage. In the photograph are: Dolly Broome; Mary Reynolds; Lily Perry; Hilda Guy; Rene Parker; Madge Grose; Audrey Cameron; Annie Gibbs, Zenie Irvine and Violet Gibbs. This is probably the song connected with a poem called “In Flanders Fields” written by Major John McCrae, a Canadian surgeon attached to the 1st Field Artillery Brigade and stationed at Ypres salient, Belgium, in the spring of 1915. During 1910-11 the first approaches were made to the Department for the establishment of a HES in Orbost and this became a reality in 1912. Orbost HES supplied post-primary education in the district until a high school was built in 1948. Orbost High School / Orbost Secondary College has played a significant part in the education of senior students in the Orbost district . It is the sole senior educational institution. In October 1863 the Rev. James Bickford visited Sale to explore the possibilities of establishing a Methodist cause there. In March 1864 a group of 8 local men petitioned Conference to appoint a minister. The men were: Nehemiah Guthridge, G. Ross, J.H. Walters, J.E. Derrick, G.E. Hawkins, R. Gibbs, J.J. Drew, J. James. The Rev. Henry Baker arrived in the Gippsland Circuit later in 1864. The first Methodist services in Sale were held in the Mechanics Institute, but by July 1865 a Methodist church had been opened for worship. A Sunday School was constructed in 1886. The Sale Methodist Church was renovated at a cost of 2500 pounds in 1951. A debutante group presented at a Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne Grecian Ball. The Grecian Ball was a very popular annual event during the 40- 60s with debutantes being a feature. In the late 1960s the Ithacan Philanthropic Society conducted its own debutante balls. Debutante balls fell out of fashion for a period of time but were back in favour in the 80s and 90s. The presentation of debutantes at Greek balls was evidence of the adoption of Anglo traditions within Melbourne's Greek community.A black and white photograph of a debutante group made up of twelve debs and their partners. Pictured are a group enjoying coffee somewhere in Greece. Standing are Maria and Zaharia Moraitis (Morris); seated: unknown, unknown, Erasmia Brown (nee Benias). Zaharia and Maria returned to Ithaca from Melbourne in the 1970s. Erasmia lived in Newcastle and returned annually to Ithaca to visit family. Greek coffee is served in small cups accompanied with a glass of water. A faded coloured photograph of five people around a table enjoying coffee. Three are seated at the table and two are standing behind them. A large window is behind the group who are drinking Greek coffee from small cups. There are glasses of water on the table.

Frame 10. Photo 1. A group of Sergeants on the deck of the Karmala. Jack and Bert were the only Sergeants from the 45th quota from the original Battalion on the Karmala. There were two other Sergeants who had transferred to the 38th, one in Oct 1918, Sgt R. L. Glover from the 37th Batt and Sgt F. Perkins also from the 37th who transferred in April 1919. In the family collection there are two faded sepia photos showing the others not in this negative. The negatives to these are missing. From the War Diary of the Karmala there were ten nurses on the Karmala and there are ten nurses in the photos. There was also the ship's Medical Officer who is hidden in this negative. The ship's S.M.O. was Captain C. P. Rosenthal from the 33rd Batt HQ. Mr. D Williams commenced work with the Upper Murray (North East) Health Group in 1937. He maintained a collection of related newspaper clippings from 1957 to 1967 which highlighted key issues related to public health in the district.
