Preston Market, Saturday late is part of a series of paintings and sketches that were included in Mary Hammond’s solo exhibition, Coming and Going, held at Bundoora Homestead Art Centre in 2010. The exhibition, a major retrospective of Hammond’s work from the mid-1970s-2009, focussed on her everyday depiction of people in Northcote and Preston, particularly along High Street, Northcote where she had a studio for a few years, and the Preston Market, primarily during the 1980s and 1990s.

Although barely visible in the image, the writing on the side of the wagon indicates it belongs to the Marriott family. The man seated at the front with the reins in his hands has been identified as Alfred Marriott. The wagon is loaded with vegetables including cabbages and (possibly) carrots. Heidi Schoenheimer is a painter that captures everyday scenes from her day-to-day. Preston Market Flowers depicts a flower stand at the Preston Markets in 2023, capturing the market at a time that its future was uncertain. The market is an important community resource and gathering place with a rich history. Opened in 1970, the space was designed to be adaptable over time, and featured large open walkways and natural light. The flower stand features flowers typically sold in Melbourne, and reflects the brightness and diversity of Preston Market.

Holly Hunt is a Melbourne-based artist, working across painting and printmaking. Her work is influenced by her everyday environment and experiences living in the northern suburbs of Melbourne — an area defined by its rich multiculturalism and working-class history. Her work captures and conveys fleeting moments of everyday life, and the diverse neighbourhoods and people that inhabit them. ‘Market Days’ reflects a period in time when Preston Market faced increasing uncertainty due to plans for redevelopment. The unusual presence of the fox symbolises these concerns, echoing the looming threat posed by the development to the market's cultural significance within the community. Mr Eric Sumsion was the gardening curator for Wodonga Shire in 1956. He had previously operated a bootmaker’s shop in High Street, Wodonga for many years. Eric saw the potential of the area in Wodonga now known as Belvoir Park and asked permission to work on part of the area. He eventually purchased a house adjoining the area giving him more time and easy access to work on it. The Lagoon, Lake Huon, Belvoir Lagoon, Belvoir Park and Sumsion Gardens are all names used over time for what is today one of Wodonga’s favourite recreation and picnic spots. In the 1800s river boats could enter Lake Huon from Wodonga Creek. There was a jetty south of where the water fountain is today. In later years, this jetty was used by the Clay Bird Shooting Club. From the early 1900s football and cricket were played there, and some mining leases were also allowed. At one time there were open gravel pits between House Creek and the main lagoon, and these were subsequently filled with town garbage collected by the Council. In the late 1940s, Wodonga Golf Club took over part of Belvoir Park for a 9-hole golf course with sand greens. The Golf Club House was built in 1946. The Club extended the course to 12-holes when the football ground moved to Martin Park and the course later extended to 18 holes. Under Eric Sumsion’s care the area became a magnificent area of parkland and curated gardens. After he had retired in 1961 his work was acknowledged by the Shire Engineer, Mr Bill Page, when the Sumsion Gardens were named in his honour. He was also responsible for the design and curating of many other gardens in Wodonga, including those at Sarah Coventry and Richardson Park. John McLaren Dimmick was the son of Cr William (Roy) Dimmick (1888-1947) and his wife, Myrtle Elvira (nee Monie - 1888-1976). He had brothers Samuel Guy McLaren Dimmick and Frank McLaren Dimmick.Black and white photo of a boy identified as John Dimmick with his prize-winning decorated bicycle on one of the curved paths in the Surrey Gardens. The Ballarat Y's Mens Club Project had this leaflet printed calling for funds to restore the Adam Lindsay Gordon Cottage. The letter to Mr R.Whitehead, Director, Parks and Gardens from Dr.R.R. The original postcards in this series (2013.002 to 2013.018) were generously loaned to Williamstown Botanic Gardens by a private collector for copying. The postcards are evidence of the interest the gardens held as a subject for postcard publishers. The text and images provide a snapshot into fashions, social interests and concerns of the time. The professionally produced images provide a pictorial history of Gardens including changing planting styles, various structures and features of the Gardens eg the aviary, cannons, the fountain, the second Curator’s Lodge and gates. The images offer an opportunity to compare garden vistas with the present day. This postcard shows the main east-west axial path with a typical Victorian/Edwardian mown grass strip which in turn borders formal shrub beds with herbaceous plantings. The Cordylines which line and avenue in this image were replaced by Mexican Fan Palms (Washingtonia robusta) planted in 1915. They were replaced with the same species in 1987. These two works of art are by Dr Don Edgar, a sociologist, educator and author. He taught sociology at Stanford University, the University of Chicago, Monash University and La Trobe University and was the founding Director of the Australian Institute of Family Studies. In the 1950s Dr Edgar was a student at Warrnambool High School and these works of art were produced at that time. For a school project he researched the early history of the Warrnambool Art Gallery and some of its collection, dating from the 19th century. In 2019 he published a book, ‘Art For the Country’, the story of Victoria’s regional art galleries and the book includes information on the founding and the later history of the Warrnambool Art Gallery.These works of art are of interest as they were painted by Dr Don Edgar, a noted academic and author today and a former resident of Warrnambool.
