Register School Administration, Absence Register School No. 2539 Mullindolingong, circa 1910
... Absence Register School No. 2539 Mullindolingong ...Historical look (early 20th century) at the administrative requirements for the running of a small country school. The level of accountability was limited to a monthly report and a visit from the District Inspector. This was still in the era where paper reporting was utmost and faster electronic reporting had still to be implemented. The significance of this register is that it highlights the need in the early 1900s for travelling time, to and from, the duties required at a small country town to be detailed closely for a bureaucracy that was relatively isolated within the larger cities of Australia. Decentralisation of not only government but also of industry had not as yet entered the Australian environment. This register also shows that the written word was clearly hand scribed and thereby a more personal form of communication. This was still in the age where you " can tell a lot about a person from their handwriting" Lucy Goonan was Leonie Prime's relation and came from Glen Creek to teach at Mullindolingong School for a couple of years. None of the other names are 'known' names from the district.Green coloured cardboard backed book with two large staples holding each page at the left side of the spine Each page of has been folded in half from a 51cm overall length to produce each individual page of the register. This method of production of the book provides 25 double sided pages. Markings on cover " Absence Register, School No........ At ......." Markings on inside cover " ABSENCE REGISTER." Underneath this heading there are six explanatory and conditional usage. Each page is printed with the heading ABSENCE REGISTER and underneath "Roll No. 191(part of initial year reference), Record No. Name of Teacher Position Date of Absence Cause of Absence No. of times absent from beginning of year, total number of days absence and remarks requirements staff /reason/time taken during the period 1923 to 1950. Each page was printed with only three numbers of the calender year 191-.This was so that each year could be manually inserted.teachers absence register small school administration, mullindolingong school 1923 -1950 -

Book - Ledger Commercial, Ledger No 5, Commenced Jan 1st 1897, circa 1890's
... Ledger No 5, Commenced Jan 1st 1897 ...Historically this ledger not only details the legible hand writing of this era but also the day to day commercial activity in this region. The neatness and the diligence of those who were required to pen the information was a requirement by all who were in commercial trade. Emphasis on neatness was ingrained in students at a young age. This era was well before general typewriters and computers. Generally all students of commerce required an accuracy in writing and arithmetic. Neatness and order were a selection requirement This item clearly identifies the Kiewa Valley as having a substantial financial hub to accommodate the various commercial enterprises within a rural environment Circa 1880's. Although Kiewa Valley had mining, agriculture, cattle and sheep it was also composed of a mixed society, encompassing all levels of society at that period. It identifies some family farming history in the specific year of 1897Leather reinforced corner covers and spine. Remaining book front and back covers are protected by blue weaved cloth. Photograph of Kiewa Valley Panorama, Kiewa Valley from No. 5 Road, Before 1945
... Kiewa Valley from No. 5 Road ...In 1943 a camp for workmen was erected and a commencement made with the erection of plant storage and workshop buildings in the new township of Mt. Beauty. The photograph was probably taken after the completion of these buildings. There is no sign of construction of the town itself. In the latter part of 1945 work was commenced on the Mt. Beauty township area with a medical centre, general trading store and some houses under construction. The No. 5 Road, from where the photograph was taken, is the road to West Kiewa Power Station and Big Hill Scenic Lookout. Is an excellent view of the Kiewa Valley before there was little work undertaken to establish the town of Mt. Beauty. Farming was well established with the evidence of huge areas of cleared land. The junction of the East and West Kiewa Rivers can be clearly seen. The first Workmen's camp is near the river and some workshop buildings can also be seen. Postcard Circa 1950, No.3 Power Station Kiewa Hydro-electric Project "V.8", Circa 1950
... No.3 Power Station Kiewa Hydro-electric Project "V.8" ...This postcard was produced in the 1950's for the tourist trade in the Kiewa Valley and Alpine region. It encompasses the period when the State of Victoria was pressured by the ever increasing demand by industry and its population for electricity supplies. Hydro electricity was seen as an untapped natural resource to quench this demand. The Victorian Alps and the rivers flowing into its valleys was ideal for the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme. The late 1940's saw the development of this scheme and the changing of sections of alpine landscape is covered by this and other postcards/pictures (tourists, construction workers, and established rural populations). This period in time was before the established wildlife and forest/nature groups became political activist who changed legislative acts to protect the environment. This rural region (Kiewa Valley/alpine plains) was at most only significant to a smaller group of winter sports, summer hikers/horse riders and rural farmers/graziers. The numbers of tourists and the increase in the local resident population was boosted by the construction of the Hydro Electricity Scheme. This influx to the regional population resulted in a corresponding diversity in services and brought about an environment that responded to a growing level of tourists and thereby permitting this industry to grow more rapidly than it would have naturally. This postcard details an attraction to the "cleaner" method of providing electricity. This postcard was purchased in 1950 by a surveyor at Landford's Gap.This black and white photograph from a Valentine's postcard is from a V2 Argus photograph postcard. It is on a 200g/m paper density photo side gloss. ... Conservator, Vol 24, No 1, Autumn/Winter, 2006 (Final Issue) ...This set of magazines is a vital tool for those researching the early days and later development of ATCV and CVA. It was modelled loosely on the magazine "Conserver" of the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV). Issues become more sophisticated in format over time and each includes news, project reports, lists of upcoming projects, and stories. The editor for 62 issues was Mr Alf Bailey (staff 1987-current (2010)who edited the Conservator from Mar 1987 to mid-2006.Alf was a former high school principal and set a high standard. Since 2006 a more compact and economical newsletter "Conservation Volunteer" has been mailed to CVA and CVNZ members and is also downloadable from the CVA website. This set of magazines is significant because it is the most comprehensive record of all aspects of the establishment, growth, expansion, and nature of ATCV/CVA and its activities. It reveals the change from a local charity to a nation-wide corporate structure engaging thousands of volunteers tackling hundreds of projects a year in Australia and New Zealand in the present day. This was the final issue of a magazine produced by ATCV/CVA from 1982-2006 (c. 90 issues). This issue was a high quality, profusely illustrated colour magazine, representing a quantum leap in professionalism from the earliest photocopied editions. magazine, conservator, conservation, volunteer, promotion, alf, bailey -

Report: Auditor-General, The Auditor-General, Audit Report No 3, 1990-91, Department of Defence, Australia's Army Reserve, 24/8/1990 (exact)
... The Auditor-General, Audit Report No 3, 1990-91, Department ..."The report highlights significant deficiencies in achieving the major objectives for the ARes that were set out in the Defence White Paper. It also identifies inadequacies in the organisation of the ARes, shortfalls in the level of resources required to maintain its effectiveness. It indicates a need for a major review of the structure and disposition of ARes units and asset holding. The ANAO has developed estimates of the cost of the ARes and these estimates indicate that the cost of training and supporting an ARes member for each day of service are substantially higher than for a ARA soldier. The report points to difficulties in recruitment and retention and the need to examine the role of women in the ARes. Training was not closely focused on the roles and objectives of the ARes and the subsequent evaluation of training activities could be improved."ISBN 0 644 13030 X army reserve, audit reports, auditor general, australian national audit office, defence reviews -
