The school exercise book belonged to Florence Tyler who was born in 1884 and died in 1914 at 30 years of age. Two letters within the exercise book are dated 1898 so it is presumed this is the year Florence compiled the book. The school was Warrnambool State School No. 1743 which opened in 1876 after the earlier Warrnambool Common School closed. This exercise book is of interest as an example of school subjects and standards covered at a 6th grade level in the late 19th century. A school exercise book of 50 pages. The hard cover of the book has a blue pattern and a label to identify the school and student. The pages are ruled with handwriting in black ink and ruled dividing lines in red ink. Each page covers a different subject - English (grammar, parsing, writing, spelling, syntax, poetry), Arithmetic, Geography, History, Science and Music. State School No. 3161 was originally situated between High Street (then Bulleen Road) and Kilby Road adjacent to Burke Road and was officially opened on 25th April 1892 with Mr Roland Gray as its Headmaster. With more people moving into the district, the School was moved in 1905 to Strathalbyn Street. (This site was to became the Kew East Bowling Club, and is now a Kindergarten.) 1929 saw the erection of the brick Infant School adjacent to the main building. In subsequent years many other buildings were added, including a weatherboard ‘Rural’ school, a brick library, an administration block, several portables, and a Community Music Centre and shelter sheds, culminating in the opening in March 2011 of the Commonwealth funded new Music/Sports Complex. At one time it was called Kew East Central School and included years 7 & 8. When Kew High School started, the high school students were accommodated there whilst their buildings were being completed.Original print positive, mounted on board of a co-educational class of students at Kew East 'Country School'. Howard Nickell is identified in an inscription on the reverse of the mount. The Age newspaper on 6 March 1906 included in News of the Day that: "At a meeting of the Executive Council yesterday it was decided to proclaim the following State schools as training schools under the provisions of the Teachers' Act: Brunswick 1213; Queensberry-street, Carlton 2365; Kew East 3161; and Queensberry-street, North Melbourne 307. These schools have been specially selected and staffed in order that teachers in training and junior teachers may study the methods of the best teachers in special kinds of work. The infant class is the special feature at Brunswick, while Kew East will be a model of the methods of a country school. Date is approximate; early Empire Day celebrations were held in May each year between 1906 and 1911 to commemorate Queen Victoria's birthday. Headmaster, George Bennett was later headmaster at Balwyn State School, which his son Gordon (later General Gordon Bennett) attended. Miss Amy Wise was a teacher at Surrey Hills State School for her entire career. (There is information in filing cabinet re Amy Wise). Note (undated) from John Reaburn states that an issue of SHNN claimed Major General Bennett was a pupil at SHPS. He stated: "I very much doubt this, as he was 19 years of age when his father was headmaster in 1906. Before that the whole family attended Balwyn State School. The statement should be substantiated or corrected".Black and white photo copied from a postcard of staff and students assembled outside Surrey Hills Primary School for Empire Day celebrations. Some children carry Union Jack flags. The cadet corps of the school stands in line on the path against the picket fence of the school carrying drums and 'rifles'. The male students are assembled in line at the edge of the road and the female students are assembled in the middle of the road. There are a number of adults in the background, presumably teachers and parents; two are identified. Centre is headmaster, Mr George Bennett and at the right is teacher, Miss Amy Wise. The photo is taken in Beatrice Avenue looking towards Canterbury Road. The scroll describes the concerns of the Churches of Richmond against the Street Icecream Vendors who are threatening the sanctity of the Holy Sunday. Each denomination organsied for each of their Sunday School Teachers to sign the petition and these where pasted together to form a Sroll. The Scroll provides an indication of the sizes of the Sunday Schools and the number of Churches in the area in 1908. The petition to the City of Richmond was intended to introduce a By-law to prevent Sunday Trading in the municipality of Richmond. A combined record demonstating the collaboration between Richmond Churches to form a residents action group to combat the threat of Sunday Vendor Trading. The scroll has a record of the names and addresses of the hundreds of School Teachers from each demonination in 1908. Penleigh Boyd, Robin and Patricia Boyd's son, writes “Prior to 1950 Robin, like most other amateur or hobby photographers, took black and white printed photographs. The oldest slides date from 1950 when Robin and Patricia travelled to Europe on Robin’s Robert Haddon Travelling Scholarship.” In 1948 Robin Boyd was awarded ‘joint first place’ in the Robert Haddon competition for his design of Mildura art gallery. The scholarship helped fund their first overseas trip. Robin and Patricia were passengers on the Greek ship “Cyrenia” departing in May 1950, passing through the Suez Canal and landing in Genoa five weeks later. Kew Primary School is the oldest school in Kew and was established on November 1, 1870. It predates the commencement of State education with its genesis lying in the year the colony was founded, namely, 1851. Nicholas Fenwick was recognized as the founder of Kew when he purchased an area of 122 acres (Lot 87) on which Kew Primary School now stands.Photograph of 35 children in Grade 1, Kew State School, 1920. This document (dated 1911), is a receipt covering the compensation for the three acres of land required to establish the Tawonga School from its original site (since 1880) to a more central site (since 1911), within the township. This receipt clearly shows the era in which the community involvement and social commitment of landholders was at a higher level, in the early 20th century, than at the latter part. Matters involving community welfare in relatively isolated rural regions was of high priority to every person whether town folk or grazier/farmer or miner. The letter of acceptance of the amount of twenty one pounds for three acres was signed by John Cooper on behalf of Ada Ryder (parent at the school), did not require State Government Compulsory Acquisition process (as it may have, had it been in the latter part of the century and if it were in a city or large town. This social benevolency was part of the period (up to the late 1900's) of the rural Australian environment. This was well before international land investments changed the picture of the socio-economics of country towns.A4 letter of confirmation of payment on pre-lined paper and with a margin. Both margin and lines are coloured in light grey. The page has been folded four times and shows faintly, horizontal lines, of manufacture. The Camp Hill State School is a gothic inspired building, completed in 1877, with an initial enrolment of over 1200 students. A deputation had previously been made in 1875 proposing that a school be built. As well as regular classes, night classes for boys were held at Camp Hill from 1879.Red covered Minutes Book, handwritten in ink, from June 1967 to April 1976. The local photograph shows the original footbridge across the Merri River near its mouth, the Viaduct road and the Warrnambool Breakwater with the Titan crane on it. The breakwater's construction was completed in 1890, the year this photograph was taken. The Viaduct has since been filled in to prevent water passing through the pylons, and the footbridge has been replaced. The photograph was presented to Flagstaff Hill on the centenary of South Warrnambool Primary School, 1877 to 1977, by the school's Warrnambool South Primary School Centenary Committee. The centenary was celebrated during August 12-13-14. The school was decommissioned in the 1990s.The photograph is locally significant for recording the completion of the Warrnambool Breakwater, for showing the original design of the Viaduct and for a clear view of the original footbridge across the Merri River. In the early 1990s a number of upgrades and improvements were made to the buildings and the playground at the Bulla Primary School. Maurice Copland was the Principal of the Ballarat School of Mines when he died aged 40. It is believed that H.H. Smith, Principal of the Ballarat Technical Art School, was responsible for this plaque. "The design for the proposed Memorial Tablet to the late Principal Mr Maurice I. Copland is respectfully submitted for your approval. It is estimated to cost in oxidized copper and polished blackwood 8.00 pounds." (Ballarat Technical Art School Principal's reports, 26 August 1921) The Ballarat Courier reported on 18 November 1922 :... The tablet had been executed by Mr H.H. Smith and his staff, to whom it was a credit, It would permanently remond them of one of whom they could not think to highly. ..." The tablet was erected just outside Maurice Copland's office, above his chair. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection.
