'Craigmore' was a guest house for men during the war years, it is now Frew Hall, a part of the new Girton College. At the time of the photo it was part of the old Girton College. The tree in the background is understood to have been planted by a visiting member of the Royal family in the late 1920's. It was one of a pair on either side of the steps up onto the verandah. The two trees were cut down several years ago go make way for developments on the site. Francy and her mother ran the boarding house for a number of years with mostly around 10 boarders. These forceps belonged to the late Colin Noel de Garis. Also donated was a foetal scalpel electrode applicator- see donation form. There is a note that former honorary curator Peter Renou collected the donation. Peter Renou does not recall being involved in the donation.( Source: Grainne Murphy 15 November 2010.) This design of obstetrical forceps, with a screw in the handle, was introduced by George Thomson Elliot (1827-1871), a New York obstetrician. Clothing. Light cream in colour. Fine possibly silk tulle, tightly gathered at the front. Measuring 255 cms long, the veil is edged with a very fine silk binding. A shorter 78 cm long layer also tightly gathered, sits over the top. A third layer also 78 cm long is separated from the lower tiers. This Would possibly be the layer that came forward over the bride's face. It may later have been removed. Deep V shape embroidered fabric insert from across shoulders to waist on centre front of bodice. Fabric insert has embroidered patterns of sun shapes and leaves. Back of bodice has circular embroidered fabric inserts below the shoulders. Embroidered ribbon insert (1.5 cm) around waistline. Skirt has 7.5 cm hem. Side fronts are gathered to the yoke, and have two darts on either side front, at the waistline. Short set in sleeves. Six panels form the A-line skirt. Some hand stitching on facings and hems. Clothing. Wrist length, dark cream, machine stitched leather gloves. Machine stitching-two rows, gives the effect of pin-tucks, are sewn in a diagonal direction from the outer wrist, across the back of the hand. The shorter outer stitching, 4 cm long has two 6mm long leather stitches, at right angle to the machine stitching. The second diagonal stitching runs around the top of the glove, and 9.5 cms across the back of the hand. It is offset with three 6 mm stitches at right angles. Clothing. Pair of short, men's gloves, with three 6 cms long pin-tucks fanned out across the back of the hand. Wrist edge of the glove is bound in the glove fabric, giving a .5 cm binging, which continues around a 7 cm opening at the inside of the wrist. This opening is fastened by a silver coloured metal press-stud, at the centre of this opening.costume accessories, male, white cotton gloves

Clothing. Very fine, cream linen bodice, with two vertical lace inserts either side of front opening, and three angled inserts from each side seam to the vertical insert. All inserts 2 cms wide. Short cap type sleeves are edged with the same lace, and band of this lace also outlines the wide square neckline. An insert between these bands has a fine, ribbon threaded through, which would act as a draw string. There is a 2.5 cm x 3 cm tab of linen at the centre back, but, no markings are evident. Three .9 cm pearl buttons, with three corresponding machine stitched button holes fasten the front. A cotton tape drawstring, and elastic are encased at the waistline giving the lower edge a peplum effect.costume, female, cream linen bodice

Clothing. Silk-satin brocade cape with 7 cm high stand-up collar. Rounded at the hipline, and curved upward toward the centre fronts, where two 6 cm wide cream ribbon bows are attached. The hemline then falls to a steep 16 cm deep peak at the centre fronts. Four metal hooks and stitch covered metal eyelets form the closure from the high collar to the bustline. Two silk fabric loops on the inside of the opening-19 cms long, and 6.5 cm wide allow the arms to be free, and the cape to remain firmly fitted. The cape is padded and stitched internally in a diamond-shaped pattern. The back of the cape is curved and fitted at the waistline and the centre back. A large satin bow is attached 12 cm above the hemline, and sits over two box pleats 12 cm long, from waistline to the hemline.costume, female, silk cream brocade short cape
