Varnished wooden panel fitted with 13 different tramway or railway related signs and one small image of a Melbourne Tramcar. The panel consists of two pieces of plywood glued to wooden backing boards. The signs have been fixed to the panel with brass screws - either round or countersunk. Functional Object - Section Staff, Electric Supply Co. of Vic (ESCo), "Car Shed Loop / Macarthur St Loop"
Demonstrates aspects of Safeworking on the Ballarat Tramway system from 1960 to c1936 when replaced by electric signs. Yields Information about the operation of Ballarat's trams and safeworking procedures.Cast brass item with a flat part recessed section with the words "BALLARAT TRAMWAYS SECTION STAFF" cast into the surface and a flat section underneath, flush with the outside edges in which the words "CAR SHED LOOP / MACARTHUR ST LOOP" stamped in. Has an open rounded end which forms a handle or a point where it could be hung on a peg. The stamped area appears to have been polished compared to the others. Used as a means of authorising a tramcar to have sole use of the track between the named points to avoid head on collisions. Safeworking object - known as a section staff. Not known when made, but in use until the introduction of the electric signalling in the mid 1930's by the SEC. Image titled "Sturt Street Ballarat", with a view from the median strip looking east with an ESCo tram at the bottom of the street. Has a number of motor vehicles in the photo, probably late 1920's early 1930's. Prominent in the photo is the store, Suttons store along with and "Indian Store", Alf Dawson - ironmonger, The Courier , and Seidel Bros shoes and boots. Has 7 Velcro dots on rear and marks where mounting devices have been removed on the rear. Shows the details of buildings in the east end of Sturt St, c1916.Digital image from a postcard from the collection of David Critchley, of Ballarat, Sturt St c1916. This 'birds eye' view of Sturt St reveals on of the early fleet standing at the city terminus probably during the Great War. Note the absence of motor cars and women's skirts are somewhat shorter - an economy concession with the shortage of cloth during the war years. A Valentines photo postcard. David scanned this pic at a higher resolution than normal, so you should be able to zoom in on the tram, which has been fitted with windshields and looks typically well used and unloved as did most of the original Ballarat fleet in their latter years.
