Colour photos of an Anzac Day march with Legatee Ron Austin in a jeep. More photos from the march include Jeff Kennett, Bruce Ruxton, John Brumby, and Peter Costello who appear to be the distinguished guests. It is Anzac Day 1995. The article in The Answer in May 1993 says: The ever-smiling L/ Ron Austin is an inspiration for all. Ron has the distinction of being the youngest surviving Melbourne Legatee to have served in WW1. He joined over 300 Legatees to march as part of the Legacy contingent to mark Legacy's 70th anniversary, and he marched again for a few blocks as he joined members of his wireless unit to catch up with old friends. Ron was just 14 and a half when he joined the R.A.N. in 1917 as a Boy Seaman. He served for 10 years, resumed civilian life, then in 1931 joined the RAAF Telecommunications. WWII kept him busy! In 1949 he became Assistant Air Attache in Washington, D.C. Ron retired from the Service in 1955 as Wing Commander. It comes as no surprise that Ron was awarded an O.B.E. for his tireless devotion to duty and you might sense Ron has been a tireless member of Legacy too." During WW1 soldiers communicated with family in Australia. When they were not required 'in-the-field' they occupied themselves with souvenirs and art work. This includes his ration book and tickets, and artwork consisting of 2 leaves, a fan and Xmas Card all attached to a white piece of paper. This collection may have been attached to the paper by family in Australia or by Percy before his return.Pte. Percy Sutton No. 3942 served in France in WW1. He joined the army on 3rd August 1915, aged 19 years and 5 months and was in the 8th Battalion. He was a railway employee, son of Margaret Sutton of William St, Wodonga. He was 5 feet 7and a half inches tall and a Methodist. He was discharged on 13th April 1919. He was born on 27th January 1897, the son of George and Margaret (nee McIntyre) Sutton. He returned to Wodonga. He died on 29th May 1971 at Mt Beauty in the Kiewa Valley. Attached to white paper a collection of souvenirs from WW1. It includes a Ration book and tickets, 2 gum leaves with French coloured ribbons, a fan inscribed with 'Forget me Not' and a 'Christmas Greetings' Card.On the Ration book - "Sutton, P. Pte. These goggles belonged to RAAF Pilot Francis Robertson who crash landed his trainee solo flight tiger moth into Nurse Carters home at Chiltern in 1943. Pilot Officer Robertson then went on to serve in New Guinea whilst flying Tiger Moths and Wirraways. WW2 significance with Francis Robertson having served in the New Guinea Campaign, flying Tiger Moths and Wirraways. Little to nothing is noted/known regarding the object. Australian nurses were in France during WW1 and WW2, [Though Australian nurses in France during WW2 seems less documented], the fabric suggests being older than younger, however it is hard to date explicitly. Though not explicitly linked to nursing, Australia or which war period it is from, the handkerchief itself is in great condition and could illuminate the roles of Australian nurses in France. WW1 German Watter Bottel possibly captured by an Aussie Digger.Water Bottle WW1 German. Dated 1916 on Leather Strap. Metal with Corduroy Cloth Cover. With Metal Press Studs to cloth cove holding cover on. Leather strapping goes around neck with buckle and is studded together together at base of bottle.
