A 'Bendigo Advertiser' article with the heading ' B.I.T. and State College Will Be Merged. ' Mr. McClure State Member for Bendigo released the news about the merger and the site of the building proposed for teacher education. The decision was greeted with contrasting dismay, excitement and resignation. Mr. K.G. Scarrott, the Principal of Bendigo Teachers' College said the Australian Universities Commission recommended the merger in their report. A Bendigo Advertiser newspaper article titled, 'New Era for Bendigo Trust - Education officer appointed,' by Amy Huxtable. Mr. James Lerk has been appointed Education Officer of the Bendigo Trust. His role will be initially to prepare material for and about the entities of the Bendigo Trust. These are Central Deborah Gold Mine, Vintage Talking Trams, Dai Gum San Wax Museum. The Tramways Museum will also be developed. George Pethard (1885-1961) was born in Ballarat. His father, George, established a soft drink factory in Numurkah, producing "Taraxale". George Jnr., joined his fathers firm in 1898 and moved the factory to Bendigo in 1909. In 1909 he married Hilda Leed. His interests expanded and by 1918 he was an auctioneer in Rochester before becoming a real estate agent in Bendigo in 1921. His business empire expanded to include a Ford dealership and a service station in Bendigo in 1924. In 1938 he became a Bendigo councillor, a position he held for 20 years.
