Colour postcard divided back, serrated edge, with a view from the Melbourne Town Hall portico, looking south along Swanston St towards the intersection of Bourke St. shows the city square, Wales Corner, trams and traffic in both streets. Has a W2 crossing Swanston St - W2 586? - the crossing is one of the type which composed of panels that allowed for maintenance. City Square completed to Flinders Lane early 1970, Bourke St Mall opened 1983 - photo mid 1970's Back has space for name and address, stamp and a message and title of postcard. This series of SS0380 photos are part of the "Eastland Litigation" launched in 1962 by the Whitehorse Traders Co-operative Association (WTCA), against the Ringwood Council's Interim Development Order of 1960. WTCA sought "orders from the Supreme Court of Victoria that the planning scheme was invalid" - See "The Eastland Litigation" chapter in "From Horse Shoes to High Heels - Ringwood Shopping Centre and Eastland 1858-2008" by Richard Carter, Bounce Books 2009.Black and White Photograph (2 copies)Written on back of photograph: "The lane running from Adelaide St. to Warrandyte Rd. Plaque - Brass Plate, The Samuel Carson Childrens' Ward, C 1925

Samuel Carson was a local farmer who in the late 1800's acquired land to the West of Warrnambool in the Farnham park estate and towards Tower Hill near Gorman's lane. By the time of his death on May 23, 1920 he left an amount of 11666 pounds. Apart from amounts left to individuals, he bequeathed one hundred pounds each to ten different orphanages, and homes for neglected children and the blind and leaving the remainder to charitable organisations at the discretion of his trustees.The donation of 3500 pounds in August 1922 was in the latter category. This plaque commemorates Samuel Carson's generosity to the newly refurbished Warrnambool Base Hospital. He left a son William who farmed at Yangery at the time of his father's death. This item is significant in that it links a local identity through his generous donation to the local hospital. It therefore has strong social,historical and interpretative value. His generosity is a significant part of the history of Warrnambool Base Hospital.Heavy rectangular cast brass plate with raised edge and text in capitals. Corners have rounded cutouts and there is a hole in each corner for attachment. In 1853, Bendigo Miners protested against the 30 shilling miners licence the had to pay the government. They wore red ribbons to show their protest and shopkeepers hung red ribbons outside their premises in support. Thousands of miners signed a petition to Governor LaTrobe to no avail. A protest gathering in Pall Mall marched to the Government camp on Camp Hill but this was a peaceful event again to no real avail.Various documents. The topics are: 1.
