Bendigo Advertiser "The way we were" from 1999. Institution: The Bendigo Base Hospital, circa 1900. The first hospital in Bendigo, built of slabs and weatherboards, opened in November, 1853. The foundation stone for the Bendigo Gold District General Hospital in Lucan Street was laid in September, 1858, and the large sandstone building opened in January, 1859. In 1864, the two sandstone wings were added followed by the clock tower in 1866. In November, 1873, the Bowen Wing was opened. The hospital was incorporated in 1883. Further additions to the Bendigo and Northern District Base Hospital have included Kurmala, Stanisteet House, the George and Edith Lansell laboratory, and pathology.newspaper, bendigo advertiser, the way we were -

A fireplace with a mantle piece with a mirror on it and a number of small ornaments. The fireplace has a gas heater in it and a hearth. Above the fireplace is stonework. On the stonework is hanging a clock and a round picture on each side of it. One picture has a Dutch windmill in it and the other is a building. Next is another bookcase with various objects on it. There are two pictures and a black object on the bookcase. There is an armchair in front of each bookcase. There is a cabinet to the left of the door. Purchased in Bendigo in 1973. Previous history unknown. Provided with laminated account of Sessions clock Co history. Mantle clock black wooden casing with embossed "flourishes" on front base and around the clock face. Fancy gold painted face featuring numbers. Black hands. Detachable back reveals the mechanism.
