It was attached to a low voltage electrical supply and then used to brush along the steel pipe to test for faults in the coatings. If there is a fault in the coating, a spark would occur. No mention of sand in braking technique.Was contained within Reg Item 3519 in which located in the filing cabinet 8/2006. Small typed carbon copy instruction or "Notice to All Traffic Staff" titled "Braking", discussing the names of emergency brake. Notes air braked trams have on emergency brake only - the air brake. Stopping trams electrically is not regarded as brake equipment, and should not be used unless air brake is defective. Dated 24/11/1950. Laminated A4 sign produced by the BTM early November 2004, advising potential travellers/visitors that the tramway was not operating due to severe damage to our power system by an electrical storm. Advises that the Depot / Museum is open. Sign was positioned at Depot Junction and secured by four tacks. Photocopy of an article in the State Electricity Commission of Victoria Magazine, Contact, Vol 1, No. 4, Feb 1937 titled "Electricity Supply and Tramways / Reconditioning the Tramway Systems at Ballarat and Bendigo". Each item had a thin strip of paper attached by staple to the top left hand corner, giving the Vol. No. details. The item gives the background to the takeover from ESCo. Details some of the work undertaken in both Ballarat and Bendigo, including the widening of double track in McCrae St to 10' to allow ex MMTB trams to run.
