Len CASTLE (23 December 1924 – 29 September 2011 ) Born Auckland, New Zealand 'My best work is when intuition and conscious choice come together successfully.' Len Castle trained as a secondary schoolteacher and started making pottery in 1947. Initially self-taught, he was the first potter to be awarded a fellowship from the Association of New Zealand Art Societies, travelling to St Ives to work with Bernard Leach in 1956-57. He lectured at the Auckland Teachers' College until the early 1960s, before concentrating on making stoneware at Titirangi, New Zealand. Silver coloured plate with Guangzhou Ocean Shipping Company logo and a picture of ship depicted. Case is decorated with fine textile patern and has a simple metal lock. A square piece of paper is adhered to the interior of the lid and contains Asian and English writing noting ‘Many thanks for you fully support and sincerely cooperaticn in the past.’ The plate sits in a red velvet mount which can be lifted out. The 8 Kings/Queens Royal Irish Hussars was affiliated with 8th Light Horse and later 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles. Gifts and visits were exchanged between the regiments. The artist, Henry Martens (b. 1790, London; d. 1868, London) was an English military illustrator and artist. He created works for the firm of Rudolf Ackermann who ran the Eclipse Sporting Gallery at 191 Regent Street. The majority of these depicted military uniforms and battle scenes, particularly images of the Sikh Wars and the Kaffir Wars. He worked mainly in water-colour although a few oil paintings do exist.Framed print of "Visiting the Outposts" by Henry Martens.
