These four items came from the wedding cake made for the 1942 wedding of Ena Todd and Jack Heazlewood. Mary Josephine (Ena) Todd was born in Warrnambool in 1920 and was a hairdresser at Josephine’s Salon in Warrnambool. When she married Jack Heazlewood he was a stoker on the H.M.A.S. Sydney. They later lived in Sydney. Wedding cakes today often continue to be decorated with items similar to these. These cake decorations are of interest as examples of wedding ornaments of the mid 20th century and as mementoes of the 1942 wedding of two Warrnambool residents, Ena Todd and Jack Heazlewood. This book was given to Lorna Steller on the occasion of her Confirmation in 1939. Lorna Otelia Steller was the daughter of Max and Felie Steller. Max Steller was a Warrnambool hairdresser who hailed originally from Germany. Lorna married Arthur George (Bill) Rogers and they lived in MacDonald Street in South Warrnambool. The Anglican Archbishop of Melbourne in 1939 was Frederick Head. No information has been found on the Rev. Crossley. This book is of interest because it belonged to a 20th century Warrnambool resident, Lorna Steller. It is also of interest as This is a hard cover book of 96 pages. The cover is red with gold lettering on the front cover. A red ribbon for marking a place in the pages is attached to the binding. William John Graham McClure (1890-1960) was registered at 47 Miller Street in 1927, with his wife Emma (nee Lindrea) who he married in 1920. William was a hairdresser. By 1931, Cyril Ernest Stott and his wife Ruby Albinia (nee Quinn) were registered at the property. They had married in 1911 and had previously lived at 139 Myers Street. This coat was made by Ena Heazlewood and was worn by both her son, John and her daughter, JudithThis coat is of interest as one made by a former Warrnambool lady in the mid 20th century. It is also an example of the style of children’s clothing worn 70 years ago. This is a child’s coat, hand-sewn and made of white cotton (towelling or boucle type material). The coat is lined with white cotton material and has a pointed shirt collar with inset sleeves and flares out slightly from the chest area. This photo is part of a collection of Wodonga Town Photos donated by Elaine Mann. Elaine was married to David Mann, a successful Wodonga businessman and community leader who passed away in Wodonga in June 2012. David was a member of the Mann family who began their business in Wodonga in 1920. Elaine was a teacher in Wodonga for many years and an active member of the community. The Terminus Hotel In 1873, James Thompson Hatch built the two-storeyed Terminus Hotel at 79 Sydney Road (later known as High Street), then sold it to George Day and Kenneth McLennan for £1,230. It was first licensed to J. G. Morton in January 1874. In 1879, Annie Allen, from Ireland, took over as licensee of the hotel containing 14 rooms, after she and her husband, George James Allen, purchased it. He became licensee in 1883. Under the Allens, the Terminus became, ‘a principal rendezvous for visitors to the town.’ September 1888 saw additions to the building that included a billiard room, a dining room, and 18 other rooms. Following the death of her husband in 1889, Annie Allen continued to run the Terminus Hotel. She later married John Haldon and was licensee of the hotel until 1893 when the licence was transferred to William Carkeek. In the early 1900s the Hotel was thoroughly renovated. The Terminus Hotel was for sale by auction on 5th March 1909. It comprised about 50 rooms, a two-storey building built of brick and iron with hot and cold water service and acetylene gas throughout. The principal hotel in Wodonga, was let from 1st January 1909 on a seven years’ lease at a rental of £9 per week. 1935 saw extensive improvements by proprietor W. P. Kinney, while in 1941 further extensive improvements were carried out to make a good hotel better. A pall of shock and disbelief descended over Wodonga’s historic Terminus Hotel on 1st June 1998 when it was destroyed by fire then demolished in 1999. The site was sold for almost $1 million and redeveloped for a medical clinic.This photo collection is of significance as it documents how the businesses and buildings in Wodonga have evolved and contributed to community throughout the late 20th century.Terminus Hotel; Gippsland & Northern Co-operative Pty. This horseshoe was carried by Ena Todd when she married Jack Heazlewood in Warrnambool in 1942. A horseshoe ornament was often carried by brides in the 20th century (and also still are today) as horseshoes are traditionally a symbol of good luck. They later lived on Sydney.This horseshoe is of interest, firstly as a sample of the type of good luck ornament often carried by brides in the 20th century, and secondly as a memento of the wedding day of Ena Todd, a resident of Warrnambool in the mid 20th century. This is a wooden horseshoe, painted silver and decorated with raised white flowers and green tracery. Attached to the horseshoe is a white ribbon tied with a bow at the end. Later they moved to Sydney. Pantaloons were worn particularly in the 19th century to cover the legs under voluminous dresses such as crinolines. This item may have belonged to earlier female members of either the Todd or the Heazlewood families.This item is of interest as an example of vintage women’s clothing and as an item donated by the daughter of a former Warrnambool resident. These are white cotton pantaloons or panties, hand-stitched. The waist band has two slits with cotton ties either side. This dress was donated by Judith McShane, the daughter of Ena Heazlewood, the maker of the dress. It was the First Communion dress worn by the daughter, Judith about 1952. Mary Josephine (Ena) Todd was born in Warrnambool in 1920. She was a hairdresser at Josephine’s Salon in Warrnambool and in 1942 married a Warrnambool man, Jack Heazlewood, a stoker on the H.M.A.S Sydney at the time. They later lived in Sydney. The material for this First Communion dress was brought back from Japan by Jack Heazlewood, on naval duties there at the end of World War Two.This dress is of interest as one made by a former Warrnambool resident and as an example of a dress made 70 years ago for a special event in a child’s life (First Communion Day) This is a hand-sewn child’s dress made of embroidered silk. The dress has a Peter Pan collar made of satin with a fluted satin band around the waist. The long sleeves are set in and the top has three press studs to close the opening at the front. The material is gathered at the waist and hemmed at the bottom. A petticoat such as this one would have been stiffened with starch and worn under a ball dress (or a stage costume) in the mid 20th century. This petticoat is of interest as an example of a skirt worn underneath a ballroom dress or a stage costume in the mid 20th century. It also has some provenance as it come from the estate of Ena Heazlewood, a former Warrnambool resident.This item is a white cotton petticoat with a flap opening at the front waist enclosed by two white buttons. The petticoat is gathered at the waist to make a wide flared skirt and has alternating panels of plain white cotton and broderie anglaise material. There is a flounce at the end stitched with cotton-covered rope at the top and the bottom of the flounce. Pat Ryan, born 1919, was a daughter of Jim Ryan, hairdresser and tobacconist. She moved to Linton as a child in 1926 when her father bought the former Bennett/Todd shop in 1926. Katherine Veronica Cunningham was born at Cape Clear in 1907. Pat Ryan and Kath Cunningham were members of the Linton Amateur Dramatic Society in the 1930s and 1940s. (See programmes in LDHS for Amateur Dramatic Society productions.) Kath Cunningham worked at the Railway Hotel. Harris Lieberman Solicitors was at that location in the mid 1970s. In 2021, a hairdresser operates out of the former Phegan's store and Hoover City is the location of Rock 'n' Roll Roasts. Chitty's Antiques occupied part of the former Bank of N.S.W. premises. James Young migrated to Australia in 1887 with his daughter Lily, living first at Yarrawonga and then moving to Linton. For reasons that are not known, he changed his surname to Clarke. He ran a small tobacconist and barber's shop in Sussex Street near the Shire offices. (An advertisement for "J Y Clarke, hairdresser & tobacconist" appeared in the first edition of the "Grenville Standard", 12 April 1895.) He died in 1917 and is buried at Linton. His daughter Lily married William Murrell (son of Ambrose and Mary Murrell). Samuel Painter, saddler, enlarged George Taylor's premises after buying the building in 1888. He carried on the saddlery while his wife conducted a fancy goods shop. The building on the left was occupied by a bootmaker, Abraham Tracey. The 2025 location for this site is 136 Main Street, Bacchus Marsh. By around 1894 the saddlery and fancy goods business operated by the Painters had ceased. The premises were then used as a greengrocery and confectionery business for some years until this business ceased and the site became the location of a branch of the State Savings Bank of Victoria for many years. Two buggies are pulled up in front of the complex, one four-wheeled, one two wheeled, the smaller vehicle pulled by a pony. The deep gutter is bridged by boards giving access to the unmade road. This image is one from a series of portraits taken by Rob Elliott to record the character of the Border District through the faces if its identities. Ronald Joseph Hoban was born in 1930. In 1951, Mr Hoban, or "Hobie" as he became known, opened his hairdresser and tobacconist business in Corryong. This was at the height of the construction of the Snowy Mountains Scheme and business was thriving. As the tobacco industry slowed down, Mr. Hoban branched out to selling sporting equipment with a focus on fishing tackle and even selling guns and ammunition when it was legal to do so. He was an active and much-loved member of the Corryong community until his death in November 2014. This portrait is significant as it depicts a person who made a significant contribution to community of Corryong and district.
