Bellows made of leather During WW1 it was marketed as a camera suitable for soldiers due to size and portability, often referred to as "The soldiers camera". It has small shutter release button mounted above the lens plate and below the lens there is a slider for choice of apertures, It originally used A127 autographic roll film. Sarah Wright was the mother of Frank Wright and was born around 1858 and died in April 1932 aged 74 years. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born. Frank Wright said that his mother had "a voice of purest gold, placidity and graciousness that were characteristic of Melba". The family lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. Frank's father William was a gold miner. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The photos in this album show the carefree, adventurous spirit of the young men soon to be ANZACS Many young men from the market garden, dairy, poultry and fruit farms as well local businesses enlisted c 1914 at the beginning of WWI. The older men, women and children then had to manage the farms while they worried about the dangers facing their beloved family members. A record of some of the experiences of men from Moorabbin Shire who enlisted c1914 and were sent to Egypt at the beginning of WW1 1914-19A thick cardboard album of 24 pages with inserts for 2 small black and white photographs per page . The camera belonged to "Jack Grinton" No 1043, 38th Batt AIF. This was Jacks second camera that he bought after buying his first camera in Cape Town on the way to England in 1916.
