Ballarat's Sturt Street has its origins in W.S. Urquhart's survey of 1851. A generous reserve was allocated for the main streets of Ballarat, of which Sturt Street was the first. In the 1860s Sturt Street was planted with blue gums, with a dual carriageway and central median strip installed.
