John Inglis was a son of David Inglis and his wife Maria, née Booty. John was born in England in 1949 and came to Victoria in 1857 with other members of his family. David Inglis, John's father, is listed as a baker in Linton in Bailliere's 1868 Victorian Post Office directory. In 1876 John Inglis married Clara Nicholls, a daughter of Henry Nicholls and Marian Nicholls née Downes. Clara was also born in England in 1849, and travelled to Victoria with her parents in 1852. John and Clara Inglis had three children. They moved from Linton to Ballarat, where John worked as a carter. Mrs Thomas Austin was Charity Ford (or Foord), born in Tunbridge Wells (England) about 1823. She married her husband Thomas Austin in England, and they migrated to Victoria with three children in 1849. They lived first in the Geelong area (at Ashby), but by the 1860s they were in the Linton district, where by 1868 they were running a stationery shop and post office in Sussex Street, next to the Grenville Shire offices. Charity and Thomas Austin had at least another eight children born in Victoria. The 1939 "Historic Souvenir of the LInton Centenary 1839-1939" says that Charity Austin "gave fine service as a nurse" to women in Linton. Charity Austin died at Caulfield in 1908. She is buried at Linton. Miss Milne was a teacher at Linton State School for many years. It is understood she is the Assistant Teacher in the photograph of school pupils and teachers, c.1888. (Registration no. 179). Miss Milne's efforts at training the children for school concerts were often commended in newspaper reports. Linton Presbyterian Church records held at show that Helen Milne was a communicant from 1886, having transferred from Inglewood. The 'Ballarat Star', 2 July 1902, p. 6, reported that Miss Milne had been presented with a gold brooch and purse, as she had been transferred to another school and was leaving Linton. Irishman John McDonagh and his wife Martha, nee Mathews, arrived at Port Phillip on the ship 'Oliver Lang' in August 1855. They brought with them their first three children: Martha, Jane and Robert, and also two of John McDonagh's nieces: Jane and Isabella McDonagh, whose parents had died in Ireland. The McDonaghs had five more children in Australia. They lived at Linton from the mid-1860s. In the Ballarat Star [newspaper] in 1867, John McDonagh was described as a "sheep and cattle dealer". He was a member of the Woady Yaloak Roads Board, and later a member of the Council of the Shire of Grenville. John McDonagh died at Linton in 1871. An inquest into his sudden and unexpected death (copy in McDonagh file) concluded he died of apoplexy (= stroke). Harriett Wilson was the wife of William Wilson, an active member of and preacher with the Linton Methodist congregation. This is one of two photographs of Mrs Wilson in the collection. This one appears to have been taken earlier than the other. The other photograph is Registration no. 480 (Box 14, also Mounted photograph 21), and shows a somewhat older Mrs Wilson, although Mrs Wilson is wearing the same dress in both photographs. An inscription on the back of the photograph says that this photograph was given by Mrs Wilson to F. Bryant on December 16, 1890. Part of Old Lintonian collection ; No. 126. Photographs of Mr Wilson are also in the collection - see Registration nos. 45, 479 & 642. It is understood that Mrs Wilson was one of the first teachers at Linton State School. Thomas Jones, the son of Matthew Jones and Ann Jones, nee Parker, was born at Banongill Station near Skipton in 1859. He died at Linton in 1942. William Wilson was a staunch member of the Linton Methodist congregation and a local preacher. Duncan Cameron, the second son of Ewen and Marion Cameron, was born in 1856 at Ashby and died at Linton in 1936. He worked as a stonemason, and was an active member of the Old Lintonians' Association. This is possibly Christopher Stratton who lived at Linton and died in 1863, however it is more likely to be his son Christopher John Stratton, who was born at Linton in 1862 and died in 1906. Henry (Harry) Mitchell, born 1867 at Scarsdale, was the only son of Frederick Mitchell and his first wife Jane McDonagh. He married Ethel Annie Austin in 1902. Henry Mitchell and his wife adopted George Ah Lyee (the name later Anglicised to 'Lee') after the death of his parents. Henry died in Western Australia in 1945. Dugald Cameron, a son of Ewen and Marion Cameron, née McDougall, was born at Ashby in 1855 and died in Ballarat in 1930. Dugald Cameron married Mary Elizabeth Gates in 1891. Mary Cameron died in 1931. Dugald and Mary are buried in Linton cemetery. Dugald Cameron acted for a number of years as Secretary to the Presbyterian Sunday School in Linton. Tom Andrews, whose father (also called Tom) was thought to have come to Linton from Jamaica, lived near the Battery Dam. Little is known of his life, other than that he attended the Methodist Church and was "a very respected citizen". In later life he lived at Boort. He is in a photograph of the Linton football team taken c.1915-1920. (Registration number 2019-247 - Mounted photograph 424.) Tom was a member of the Old Lintonian's Association and attended its reunions in the 1930s. Photograph is part of Old Lintonian collection; No. 124. Some doubt about whether this is a photograph of an Old Lintonians' Association reunion. An identical photograph in the collection (Registration no. 242) is said to be of the Methodist Church jubilee celebration in 1910.(OLA reunions did not start until 1914.) This photograph is believed to date from an early Old Lintonians Association reunion, possibly held in 1914. A note accompanying the photograph says it was taken at Linton Park. Note that this may not be a photograph of an OLA reunion.
