One is blank; the other has been sent to Mrs A Wyatt, C/O Mrs E Young, 'Grand View', Warburton from daughter Nellie from 'The Quantocks', Surrey Hills - postmarked 10 Dec 1906. There is also a reproduction of this image in a framed collage of Surrey Hills photos.This is the earliest known image of the Surrey Gardens. The layout was originally designed by William Guilfoyle, who also designed Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens.Black and white photo taken from an early postcard. Taken from the roof of a house in Essex Road, it shows the development of housing between Essex and Union Roads and includes the section of land fenced off for the Surrey Gardens with paths roughly laid out, one existing tree but no tree planting. The houses depicted are largely Edwardian timber buildings with corrugated rooves. There are still some vacant blocks. Victor GREENHALGH (1900-1983) Born Australia Victor Greenhalgh studied at at the Ballarat School of Mines, and was appointed to the staff in 1938. He was the commissioned sculptor for the King George V statue located in Ballarat's Sturt Street Gardens, as well as eight of the portrait busts of Australian Prime Ministers which line the "Avenue of Prime Ministers" in the Ballarat Botanical Gardens. From 1938 he taught at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT). The bust of Dick Richards was Victor Greenhalgh's last work, and was cast after the sculptors death. It was donated to the Ballarat School of Mines by Victor Greenhalgh's wife Violet Greenhalgh (Hambly). Dick Richards and Victor Greenhalgh were brothers-in-law. Dick Richards was a member of Shackleton's ill-fated Trans-Antarctic Expedition, and was awarded the Albert Medal for his heroic contribution as a member of the Ross Sea Shore party. In 1972 the Albert Medal was exchanged for the more widely recognised George Cross. Speaking at the unveiling of the sculpture in Dick Richards said that on his return fro the expedition in 1917 he had little inclination for a sedentary or a teaching career. By the time he retired in 1958 he was not at all sorry that he had spent his life as a teacher. Victor Greenhalgh died in Queensland in 1983. He was a member of the Liberal Party of Australia, and alienated many with his unorthodox style of leadership. Large black and white photograph mounted on heavy cardboard showing a very large conifer being replanted by a number of people. The original photograph is held at the Melbourne Herbarium and the information provided by them is that, "This photograph was taken after William Guilfoyle became Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, succeeding Baron von Mueller. Hymettus Historic Garden and its cottage museum were opened to the public in 1985 after two years of garden restoration work. The interpretive work was undertaken by Mr and a team from Melbourne's Royal Botanical Gardens and the Taffe family.
