The Blackburn South Post Office was in 1962 housed in a building originally built as a P.O. for the 1956 Olympics games. It was located in the grounds of the M.C.C. and was transported to the Blackburn South site. Demolished c1970s. Information supplied by Stan Hander, 34Drummond Street, Blackburn South. Anne Pedretti was born at Elevated Plains, Victoria, on 15 September 1875, the daughter of Martino Pedretti and Sarah Ind. She married George Gervasoni of Yandoit Creek, and died at Dayesford on 13 August 1957. Joyce Coffey (nee Hiddlestone) was the first woman to receive recognition as a designer in a major Australian manufacturing business, Kempthorne Lighting, where she was the chief designer in the post war period. These design drawings by Joyce Coffey were for the Well Glass lamp series of lights that were designed for indoor and outdoor use. Joyce Coffey worked in partnership with Selwyn Coffey on the designs. In 1956 lights from this series won a bronze award in the Industrial Design section of the Arts Festival exhibition of the Melbourne Olympic Games. John and Phyllis Murphy designed this house and garden in Kew for Sir Frank and Lady Macfarlane Burnet in 1959, the year before Burnet and Peter Medaware received the Nobel Prize for discovering acquired immunological tolerance. For the most highly honoured scientist to have worked in Australia, Burnet's house is modest - single storey with two bedrooms. Typical of post-war suburban housing thought, the garden is a generous, and the planting a mix of existing shrubs and trees, old favourites such as camelias, hydrangeas, lilacs, and a unusually 'a thick copse of native trees'. John Murphy (1920-2004) and Phyllis Murphy (nee Slater) (1924-) are alumni of RMIT. John commenced his architectural studies at Swinburne Technical College prior to WW2, and subsequently studied at Melbourne Technical College (now RMIT University) from 1944 to 1946. Phyllis studied architecture at Melbourne Technical College from 1942, before transferring to Melbourne University's Architectural Atelier in 1944 They both completed their Bachelor of Architecture in 1949, with Phyllis topping the fourth year, and John coming in second. Black and white photo of a finale of an Annual Demonstration at the Melbourne Town Hall. Part of the set design were the Olympic Rings and sign saying Olympic Games. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and eurythmics, the Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to the late 1970's, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium. The beautiful costumes were made by members of the Junior Legacy Mothers' Club and the Melbourne Legacy Wives' Association. Yields information about the way the SEC marked the achievement of safety records by workers and yields information about the work of the SEC Ballarat tram depot.A flag or banner made for the SEC to enable an award to work sites that had achieved 100,000 man hours without an accident. Base materials for the flag is blue cloth with blue cotton seamed edges, the left hand side has been overlain by about 15mm to provide a part where a dowel or rope could be passed through. Has the 100,000 Man Hours area with a yellow paint overlay and the 100,000 hours in black paint. The Accident Free is in a darker yellow pain and the SEC Logo of the Electricity Supply Department is in the same yellow base with black lines. On the rear is the Evan Evans manufacturing logo with the Olympic rings giving address and that they were the official flag makers for the XVIth (16th) Olympic games (Melbourne 1956) and the VIIth (7th) British Empire and Commonwealth Games (Perth 1962). This indicates the flag was made early to mid 1960's. "The banner has been with the Club since it was created in 1957. Recent research has confirmed that it was made by Joan Eddy, the wife of club member Kevin Eddy and a professional seamstress. Grace Blake’s interview notes record her conversation with Mr Eddy on 24 October 2014: Kevin confirmed that the banner was made by his wife, Joan Eddy, in time for the opening of the new shed after the Olympics (1957). Kevin was the Social Secretary at the time, and co-opted his wife, who had worked as a machinist for Harford Clothing in Carlton before they married. Her mother had also worked there as a sewing hand (hand sewing the linings for jackets). The company was later taken over by Sires. ... It was made at home (Joan had ‘retired’ from work by then)." Excerpt from the 2014 Significance Assessment, p32.Banner Celebrating Albert Park Rowing Club Olympic Representatives, 1956 Statement of significance by Margaret Birtley, October 2014 Harry Gordon, the distinguished Australian sports historian, wrote of the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games: "When the Olympic Games moved into Melbourne ... it was as if the city had been brushed by a certain magic. Nothing before or since ... has ever evoked such sheer emotional involvement from the whole community." Gordon refers to the large crowds that massed in Melbourne with anticipation and exhilaration on the day before the official opening, ‘with little apparent motive other than just to be there, and be happy’. The hand-crafted banner celebrating Albert Park Rowing Club’s representatives at those Olympic Games seems to exude that same sense of joy and exhilaration. Made by the wife of the club’s social secretary, it testifies to the admiration felt by individuals and organisations for the success of their own on a world stage. The banner has historic significance for its accurate documentation of the great achievement of a single rowing club in contributing six outstanding athletes to the relatively small Australian rowing team. Additional historic significance derives from the fact that this is an unofficial expression of tribute and pride. The banner’s incorporation of the Olympic rings would now be likely to require licensing by the Australian Olympic Committee, a process that can dampen social engagement. While definitely a hand-made item, there is some aesthetic significance in the design and execution of the banner. Good judgement has been demonstrated in the selection of fabrics and the choice of colours. The workmanship is quite skilful. The vertical symmetry and the horizontal balance of the design are pleasing to the eye. The use of red for the heading lines and black for the Olympians names is well-chosen and aesthetically pleasing. The collection holds black and white photographs of the same oarsmen at the Olympic regatta. This banner complements their role in the collection by providing colour and a sense of connection with an affectionate and supportive community. Its social significance transcends the local context for which it was created and used, to become part of the large body of art, craft and memorabilia that are associated with the Olympic movement worldwide. This beret was worn by Marlene Austin, nee Trenberth in 1956 as part of the uniform of an official driver for the Melbourne Olympic Games. Marlene, who was living with her parents in Brighton at the time, took leave from her job as a stenographer to work as a driver at the Olympics. She drove officials and dignitaries from a variety of nations (including Thailand, Italy, Cuba and Sweden) to and from events, collecting a number of souvenirs, including a Venezuelan pennant and a pair of earrings gifted by the Thai delegation. Marlene's family have lived in Brighton since 1941, when her parents moved into a house at 15 Moffat Street.
