Plaque - PLAQUE, 38TH BN COMFORTS FUND, 38th Battalion Comforts Fund, C.1921
This plaque was originally placed in the Foyer (Vestibule on original plans) of the Soldiers Memorial Institute Bendigo in 1921. After closure in 2016-18 for the renovations to SMI the plaque was then placed in what was originally called the "Writing Room" now called "The Building and RSL History Room". The plaque had the gold paint renewed about 2012 - 15.Plaque marble, grey with streaks of white through, inscription is engraved with Gold paint. Letter dated 23/6/1941 from Chris McKinley VX46283. From 21st Aust Infantry Training Battalion, abroad in Middle East. Letter sent home to Miss L. Crozier. Letter is signed off by soldier's Officers and filled in on Salvation Army stationary specifically for Australian troops.1 & 2. Two page letter on Salvation Army stationary of approx A.4 size. Paper faded to a yellow colour. Folded into sixth size. 3. Envelope has address and stamp saying "Passed by Censor". Corners of the envelope ripped.Front marked "Air-Mail" and signature of Officer. John Allan FLEMING enlisted on 19.1.1916 age 26 years 6 months in C Coy 38th Bn Regt No 873, appointed Cpl 5.3.1916 then Sgt 6.3.1916, appointed CSM 20.4.1916, embark for England 20.6.1916, he was appointed Lieutenant as he was hospitalised with fever on 18.8.1916, rejoin unit 24.8.1916, embark for France 22.11.1916, 28.11.1916 attached to 10th LTMBattery, discharged from the AIF on 5.5.1919. Post War he had a career in the CMF ending in 1945.This is a B & W photo of a boxer in bare fisted fighting stance. He has a tattooed chest which appears to be of a dragon.
