Alun LEACH-JONES (1937 - 24 December 2017) Born Maghull, Lancashire, United Kingdom Arrived Australia 1960 Alun Leach-Jones is recognised as one of Australia's leading abstract colour painters. He spent his childhood in the Welsh village of Glasfryn, Denbighshire. At the age of 14 he started a three year apprenticeship with the Solicitors Law Society, Liverpool illuminating manuscripts and hand copying legal documents. While working with the law society Leach-Jones studied painting and drawing in the evenings at the Liverpool College of Art between the years 1955-57. He immigrated to Australia in 1960, settling in Adelaide and attending the South Australian School of Art, after which he travelled and exhibited throughout Australia and abroad. In 1966 Leach-Jones celebrated Noumenon series was shown with Australian Galleries in Melbourne and he was immediately recognised as being part of what was then labelled as ‘the New Abstraction’ in Australian art. Elwyn (Jack) LYNN (6 November 1917 – 22 January 1997) Born Canowindra, New South Wales Sydney based artist Elwyn Lynn was a self-taught artist who often used unconventional painting media and expressive surfaces to create abstract work. He trained as a teacher, and was a teacher of English and History in Sydney Secondary schools until 1968. From 1969 to 1983 Elwynn Lynn was Curator of the Power Gallery of Contemporary Art at Sydney University where he built up an international collection, which is now within the Sydney Museum of Contemporary Art. He was an art critic at The Australian for many years, and wrote several books, including one on the artist Sir Sidney Nolan. Elwyn Lynn was awarded Membership of the Order of Australia in 1975. He won the Wynne Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW in 1988, received an Honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of Sydney in 1969, and received the Emeritus Award from the Australia Council in 1994. Max MIDDLETON (1922-2013) Born Melbourne In a career spanning 60 years, Max Middleton is known as a 'plein air' landscape painter the artist loved to paint sunrises, aiming to capture what he saw on the spot in paint. Capturing the light was crucial to his artworks. Max Middleton studied Drawing at the National Gallery School under William Rowell in 1938, and painting under Harold Septimus Power in 1940. Doug WRIGHT (1944 - ) Born Ballarat Doug Wright studied at the Ballarta School of Mines Art School between 1963 and 1964, followed by studies at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology from 1965 to 1966, resulting in a Diploma of Art (Fine Art Painting). Since 1974 Doug Wright has had over 20 solo exhibitions and a survey exhibition in 1993 which travelled Victorian Regional Galleries. From 1975 to 2009 Doug Wright was Lecturer in Painting at State College of Victoria (Ballarat) and University of Ballarat. Ken SEARLE (1951- ) Born Sydney, New South Wales Ken Searle worked on this commission through 1997 and 1998. Further works and sketches relating to this commission are held by the Art Gallery of Ballarat. Searle is a self-taught artist who first exhibited his paintings and drawings in the mid-1970s and is known for large, and often whimsical, paintings, of suburban and industrial areas in several Australian cities. From 1998 to 2001 Searle worked as a consultant at the school in the Aboriginal community of Papunya, Central Australia. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. In 1936 Nornie Gude was studying at the Ballarat Technical Art School, and the National Gallery Drawing School in Melbourne. She won many art competitions, including first prize at the 1936 Melbourne Royal Agricultural Show for still life drawing, and in 1941 became the first woman to win the National Gallery Students Travelling Scholarship. In the 1936 Ballarat School of Mines Annual Report it was stated: "It is my pleasure to report a most successful year in the Technical Art School. Rick AMOR (1948- ) Born Frankston, Victoria After completing a Certificate of Art at the Caulfield Institute of Art in 1865 Rick Amor studied at the National Gallery School, Melbourne from 1966 to 1968. Amor has held over 60 solo exhibitions, and has worked in Barcelona, New York and London. In 1999 Rick Amor became the first official Australian war artist since the Vietnam War. He was appointed by the Australian War Memorial to document the devastated land in East Timor, and the reconstruction efforts of peacekeepers. Professor David Caro OAM was Chancellor of the University of Ballarat for two terms, between 1998 and 2004. His contributions to academia and science have recognised on a national and international global scale. Marion POPPLEWELL (1912-1998) Born Yorkshire Marion Popplewell visited relatives in Ballarat in the early 1940s. She loved Ballarat so much she decided to stay. She worked at a bank in Lydiard Street, opposite the Art Gallery of Ballarat, and lived in rooms above the Lydiard Street Shops. Marion enrolled in some evening classes at the Ballarat Technical Art School (a predecessor institution of Federation University Australia) conducted by Neville Bunning. He was nor overly happy with her small colourful jugs and vases, wanting her to handbuild pots, rather than wheel throw them. Marion Popplewell continued making her small wheel thrown pots with fine handles, and made glazes herself from materials imported from England. Attending classes in Ceramics up until the mid 1970s, she also took some classes in Woodwork and Needlework. Her 'Pink Glazed Jug' 1945 won a prize at the Royal Melbourne Show in the late 1940s. She died in Melbourne on 26 September 1998. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Deep blue glaze with rim banded in a second glaze, causing a eutectic reaction, causing the spontaneous syrupy runs down the outside of the vessel. Vessel has many small divots, suggesting the clay may have been reclaimed, or collected from nature, and not thoroughly prepared before throwing. Vessel has one small chip (13mm x 5mm) on inside of rim, but is not a threat to its overall integrity. Wes WALTERS (06 August 1928 - 19 August 2014) Born Mildura, Victoria From 1940 t0 1945 Wes Walters attended the Ballarat High School. He then studied architecture at the Gordon Institute in Geelong, followed by art at the Ballarat School of Mines (a division of the Ballarat School of Mines). During his time at the Ballarat Technical Art School (later Federation University Australia) Walters studied under Neville Bunning and Taylor Kelloch, and was awarded the Ballarat Ladies Art Association Scholarship in 1948. He next moved to Melbourne to work as a commercial artist with the George Patterson advertising agency. Each evening Walters studied life drawing at the Victoria Artists’ Society and taught himself anatomy. Wes Walters excelled in both abstract and realist art. He won the Art Gallery of Ballarat’s Minnie Crouch Prize for watercolour art in 1953 and 1956. He won the prestigious Archibald Prize in 1879 for his portrait of Phillip Adams.
