Situated 150 miles from Sydney and 50 miles from Bathurst, Hawkin's Hill mining leases had produced good returns in the 1860's and 70's. However, a lack of working capital meant that many of the mines operated by up to 17 different companies petered out. About 1886 efforts were made to consolidate these claims but insufficient funding could be found. With the renewal of an offer of a government subsidy and the sale of shares, has allowed the purchase of these old claims and their infrastructure. Exploration has shown that these old mines still contained payable amounts of gold. Thus the formation of the Amalgamated Hill End Company.Typewritten letter dated 2nd February 1911. The Director, Bruce Ludeman, had previously been a stock and station agent before establishing his real estate business in Warrnambool in 1985. Bruce Ludeman, a business broker, auctioneer and property manager, is President of the Otway Division of the Real Estate Institute of Victoria and received a Presidents Award in 2012 for services to the real estate industry in the Western District. This envelope is of minor interest as an example of the type of business envelope used today in the real estate businesses in Warrnambool. This is a business-type white envelope with a see-through insert to show the address. It is self-sealing. The name and business address of Ludeman Real Estate is printed at the top left hand corner of the envelope. These two ledgers contain details on mortgages in the Warrnambool district but the business person or persons associated with the ledgers is unknown. One ledger dates from 1913 to 1925 and the other from 1910 to 1926. The financial dealings of the mortgagees and mortgage brokers are listed in detail and many of the names in the ledgers are well-known historically and include Crisp, Coulstock, Coleston, Flett and Goldstraw. There are also some unfamiliar names worthy of research. These ledgers are of historical interest and have potential value to researchers of local history.These two ledgers have brown covers made of wood with a cloth covering. The pages are attached to the cover by metal inserts with screws and have alphabetical tabs. The Denny Lascelles Wool Warehouse was the first building in Victorian planned to facilitate storage, inspection and marketing of wool in one operation, and upon completion was the second largest store in the colony. CJ Denny's was largely responsible for establishment and development of the wool marketing industry in Geelong and is a figure of significance in the history of settlement in Geelong.
