Hans Walter von Gruenewaldt was a German POW who used his artistic ability to paint several large mural caricatures while he was held at Camp 13 at Murchison. The technique he used was colourful house paint, painted directly onto the walls of the German mess hut, reading room and recreation hall in compound 13D. The paintings were completed over a duration of six years (1941-1946). Book, Adolf Wilke, Die Nibelungen Besprechung, 1940's
This manuscript was the brain child of German, Adolf Wilke, Afrika Korp, Prisoner of War. In a cell in Camp 13 he watched smoke from a chimney of the Recreation Hall where his mates were discussing a play. The verses describe various members of the group and their activities. The cartoonist was Count Hans Wolter van Gruenewaldt, a German mining engineer who escaped internment in South Africa, ending as a prisoner in Camp 13. This is a copy of the original. Only 3 copies of the original were made by Gerry von Gruenewaldt - one for Adolf Wilke, one for Gus Pohlig and one for himself. Gerry had a photographed copy made, printed and bound and donated it to the Tatura Museum.Cream coloured card front and back, bound together with a black multi ring binder. Photographed pages of the original printed and put together in book form. Name of book on front top left in black print with first letter of each word in red. Inside pages are on cream card. Greyhound Coursing was popular as far back as 1886, when the first president of the club was Mr Gellion. From 1896, open coursing was held at Dhurringile Estate until 1904, when meetings were held "in the paddock north of the town" In 1919 the Tatura Plumpton Coursing Club was inaugurated and successfully ran many of the classics, such as the Oaks, Derby, and Waterloo Cup meetings until 1967, when Plumpton Coursing was declared illegal. Unions Ballarat
Minutes of meetings of Eight Hour Anniversary Committee, 11 November 1892-27 January 1916
The establishment of the 8hours day by the Operative Stone Masons in 1856 gave an impetus to the Trade Union Movement in the colony and the slogan “8hrs Work 8hrs Rest 8hrs Recreation” became established fact for the first time in the world. This event was rightly regarded as worthy of celebration and 8hr anniversary committees were formed throughout Victoria. In 1883, the Ballarat Eight Hours Anniversary Committee was renamed Ballarat Regional Trades and Labour Council. The minutes are a core historical source of information from the inception of Eight Hours Anniversary Committee, subsequently known as Ballarat Trades and Labour Council. They represent the history of unionism in the Ballarat region. The minutes include items relating to industrial campaigns, social justice and are of political significance to the region. Bound, paper. Vol 1: 11 November 1892-23 March 1900. Vol 2: 3 April 1900-23 June 1911. Vol 3: 12 December 1911-27 January 1916 - also contains minutes of the Progressive Political League of Victoria, Ballarat West Branch, 22 June 1891-14 March 1892.eight hours anniversary committee, ballarat regional trades and labour council, btlc, unions, eight hour day, ballarat trades hall, progressive political league of victoria -

Balance sheet of the Broken Hill Strike Fund (1892); Eight Hours Demonstration (1891); Illawarra Miners' Mutual Protective Association Strike Fund (1886), 1886-1892
Broken Hill strike (1892) was driven by the Women's Brigade and local miners to defend the mines from imported labour. Strike action became infeasible as main persons were arrested for "unlawful conspiracy and inciting riots" and were imprisoned. The Illawarra Miners' Mutual Protective Association Strike (1886) was to secure better rates of pay. The Eight Hours Demonstration (1891) was held in December 1891 as part of the campaign for the Eight Hour Day: 8 hours work, 8 hours rest and 8 hours recreation. The BTLC supported the Broken Hill strike and the Illawarra Miners' Mutual Protective Association Strike. Historically, BTLC was formed out of the Ballarat Eight Days Anniversary Committee. Photograph: Labour Day March - Ballarat - 2019, 11/3/19
Labour Day originates from the eight-hour day movement - eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest. On 21 April 1856 Stonemasons and building workers on building sites around Melbourne, Australia, stopped work and marched from the University of Melbourne to Parliament House to achieve an eight-hour day. Their direct action protest was a success, and they are noted as the first organised workers in the world to achieve an eight-hour day with no loss of pay, which subsequently inspired the celebration of Labour Day and May Day. (Wikipedia, 12 March 2019: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_holidays_in_Australia#Labour_Day) The eight-hours campaign ran contemporaneously in Ballarat. -------- The Labour day parade is an annual event in Ballarat. All unions and individuals are welcome to attend. Ballarat Labour Day march is held at the same date as the Begonia Festival parade; inception of the Begonia Festival was several decades later in 1953. -------- Photo 1 Labour Day march: We are Union banner and AMIWU banner with people.
