Ernest Morton Vains (1881 - 1951) was a local business man and Bendigo councillor who arrived in Bendigo in 1897 aged 16 from Kerang. In 1916 he founded the firm E M Vains and Co with his brother Sidney and they operated from Hargreaves Street in Bendigo with branches in Elmore, Mitiamo, Dingee, Knowsley, Heathcote and Prairie. E. M. Vains was a member of the City Council from 1922 - 1926 and was elected Mayor on August 29th, 1924. He played a prominent role in many of the City's community and industry groups and was a member of the Rotary Club which was founded in 1925 and a member of the Corona Lodge of Freemasons. The Bendigo Easter Fair was established in 1871 to fundraise for the hospital and the Bendigo Benevolent Asylum. Annie Mary (Mollie) Sibson was a nursing sister at the Bendigo Hospital in the late 1920's and early 1930's until her marriage to Dr Eugene Sandner in 1933, although Mollie did continue to hold an unpaid position on the Board of Management of the hospital for many years afterwards. Ernest Vains entered council in November 1922 and was a member of the City council from 1922 - 1926. Richard Hartley Smith Abbott was the step son of Joseph Henry Abbott and inherited his families business interests, building successful commercial enterprises such as Abbott Supply Co. He was elected a representative in the Mandurang riding in the Shire of Strathfieldsaye in 1887, served as Mayor of the City of Bendigo from 1917 - 1918 and a member of the legislative Council of Victoria. Barkly Hyett was a leading Bendigo solicitor and solicitor to the Bendigo City Council for 45 years prior to his death in 1935. Like many men with money of this era he served on local boards such as the Bendigo Base Hospital, Bendigo Y.M.C.A. Bendigo Law Association, South Bendigo Bowling Club and St Andrew's Presbyterian Church. He was also associated with mining companies and financial institutions. His son Alan joined his business in 1914 but died during WW1 after which time his younger son Rex joined and his name appears on this receipt alongside his fathers. Benjamin Bolton and his two eldest sons, William and Arthur, began a printing business known as Bolton & Sons on March 25, 1885. The location of the original printing business was in High Street, Bendigo but later moved to Williamson Street where the business underwent a name change to Bolton Bros and expanded into manufacturing paper bags and other stationery lines. In 1902, Bolton Bros moved to 43 Mitchell Street which housed the retail stationery department and the main office, while the printing factory was on the second and third floors. Next door at 47 Mitchell Street the wholesale division and machine service department operated. William and Arthur Bolton and their sons travelled throughout central and northern Victoria selling their own products and representing other companies. Bolton Bros continue to trade today with fifth generation family ownership continuing the tradition.
