Various artifacts from the steamship 'Wattle'. The Steam Tug Wattle, a steel ship, was built as a harbor tug in 1933. Steam is supplied from a two-furnace Scotch Marine wet-back boiler which was originally fired with dewatered and filtered waste oil but has recently been converted to burn distillate for environmental and maintenance reasons. It was launched at Cockatoo Island on 27 June 1933 by Cockatoo Docks & Engineering Co. Ltd. (CODECO) on order from the Commonwealth Shipping Board. A press release from Melbourne Legacy in 1975 which relates a story of how Legacy works. The information was intended to be used by press and magazines etc. The title 'A high flier' is about 'Bill' a young 13 year old boy who lived with his mother, a widow, and 10 other children in poor surroundings. Legacy was able to organise assistance from War Service Homes to give them a chance of a home of their own. Legacy helped in the usual way, with educational expenses, school uniforms, and other school expenses. Bill achieved his leaving certificate, then matriculated and gained a Commonwealth scholarship. He chose to do Aeronautical Engineering at Melbourne University and Legacy provided a spot for him at Blamey House where he could live close to his studies. He went on to complete his studies at University of Sydney and helped by a research scholarship also the Imperial College of Science and Technology in London, then commenced a post-graduate PhD studies in Aerodynamics. He became a Research Lecturer at the Imperial College. The newsletter from December 1956. It featured a fireman and a Santa on the cover. The president's introduction talked about London as a city of the Commonwealth and Christmas greetings. There was an Christmas story written by Rachel Field. There were results from the annual Boys Sports Day at Melbourne High School with names of JLs. Malvern group won the Memorial shield. It also announced the formation of the Intermediate Legacy Ladies Club. They had held a fete to raise money. They met on the third Wednesday each month. They say "Our feelings are that as Legacy has done so much for us we want to help Legacy." Another article on deciding a career for the children - this time the engineering industry. A newsletter published by Legacy in this format for many years from 1942. It mentions "Issued from time to time for Private Circulation among the Sons and Daughters of Deceased Service men and Merchant Seamen who served their Country during the War of 1914-18, or the present War". Many articles on the work of Legacy, including features on boys classes, girls classes, camps, the residences and where their past residents ended up. There are some suggestion for careers and some general interest articles. Established in 1950, the Department of Supply headquarters transferred to Canberra in January 1968 and was dissolved in 1974. It was superseded by the Department of Manufacturing Industry and Department of the Special Minister of State. The Department was a Commonwealth Public Service department, staffed by officials who were responsible to the Minister for Supply. The department's main function was to support Australia's Navy, Army and Air Force in defence production, research and development, purchas­ing, transport and storage. The Department was also the Commonwealth Disposals Authority. Finally, the Department was responsible for the Australian Antarctic program. Bendigo was the site of an Ordnance Factory and manufactured and reconditioned naval guns and mountings, turbine gears for large ships, general heavy engineering work, large fabricated structure and missile handling equipment. The factory was managed in 1970 by R.I.M Moss. The department may have had an office in the former Bendigo Post Office now the Bendigo Visitor Information Centre.Blue, felt or wool peaked service cap with woven band and plastic strap.
