Pair of embroidered doyleys for cake or sandwich trays made by Mary Burke of Dooboobetic in the 1920s. After her marriage to Michael Taffe in 1940 Mary moved to Ballarat and many of her embroideries remain in the house. They range from duchess sets to doyleys such as these. simple embroidery was taught to young girls in schools up until post-World War II.

Artwork. A square of silk fabric, finished on the four sides with a .8 cm fringe of the fabric. A border of blue stitchery 2 cm from inside the fringe surrounds a floral design of three variegated pink flowers, one variegated blue flower, and soft green leaves. In one corner is a butterfly with soft pink wings, dark body, and long antennae. Burgandy satin stitch buds, and centres in two of the flowers add depth.artwork, doyley

The Centenary of Warrnambool in 1947 drew crowds of 20000. It was generally felt that the celebrations excelled anything that had been seen in the city in the last 100 years. There were numerous activities held over the weekend including an elaborate street parade which was followed by joining the 4500 children at sports and picnic celebrations at the showgrounds. The Warrnambool and District Turf club also held a race meeting to aid the Hospital and raised 740 pounds. It was estimated that 20000 attended the finale bonfire and fireworks in Albert Park. This is a hand made item to commemorate the occasion. Textiles. Basically circular in shape, but cut and hemmed in a geometric 16 sided manner. Edges are cut and hemmed in a drawn fabric manner, and this is repeated in a decorative way, in the centre of the doyley, echoing the outer shape of the doyley. Cream cotton doyley (doiley) crocheted by either Elsie Nolting (nee Fraser) or her cousin May Rose (nee Bennett) both of Charlton Victoria. The item was made around 1918 as a dedication to the success of the allies in the First World War. Doyley is crocheted in a treble stitch, edged with clear glass beads.
