Dr George James Scantlebury practised as a doctor in Linton in the 1880s. He married Catherine Millington Baynes who was Postmistress at Linton. The family moved from Linton to Cheltenham in 1889. Vera Scantlebury was born in Linton in 1889 just before the family left for Cheltenham. The Scantlebury's other three children were all born in Cheltenham - George Clifford (Cliff) in 1890, Dorothy (Dot) in 1893, and Ethel Eileen (Eileen) in 1899. Vera Scantlebury (afterwards Vera Scantlebury Brown) also became a doctor. She was instrumental in the establishment of the Infant Welfare Division of the Victorian Health Department, and was first Director of Infant Welfare. Dorothy Scantlebury became Principal of Toorak College in 1942.Black and white copy of original photograph. "Wangaratta's Own", the 2nd 24th Battalion was formed in Wangaratta on 1st July 1940, during World War Two. They camped at the Wangaratta Showgrounds, where they trained until they marched out of Wangaratta on 28th September 1940. Before they marched out Alan MacFarlane and the Battalion were presented with the Battalion pennant by Wangaratta Mayor, Cr Thomas Nolan. They fought in . On 28th September 1990, the 50th anniversary of the Battalion leaving Wangaratta, (retired) Alan MacFarlane, President of the 2nd 24th Battalion Association were presented the Freedom of the City and represented with the Battalion pennant by Wangaratta Mayor, Cr Kevin Gleeson & Cr Val Gleeson, Cr Thomas Nolan's son in law & daughter. This was an Army Battalion formed in Wangaratta. The young men interacted with the businesses, sporting & social societies & families of Wangaratta in the early 1940's. The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. The Melbourne Legacy created a widows' visiting group in 1981. Called the "Home and Hospital Visiting Programme". The visiting group was formed of widows who would visit women in hospital or their homes or nursing homes. This photo shows Joyce Coomer (left) and Kath Silvers (right) of Coburg widows' Club enjoying a cuppa with Eileen Moore in her home.The article mentioned 'many find it easier to discuss personal concerns with another woman and Legatees recognise this.' The soldier in the photo is Charles Alfred KEDGE No.38512. Born in Bendigo, he enlisted on 8.11.16 aged 21 in the FIELD ARTILLERY BRIGADE Reinforcement 32. Embarked for England 26.11.17, embarked for France 17.7.18, KIA 16.8.18 at Tincourt, France. The photo was most likely taken in Croydon, South London at the home of Stephen Tully, the elder man sitting in the photo. Betty Tully is in front of him, Eileen in the white dress. The lady in the black dress is Annie Parker. The photo was taken prior to Kedge embarking for France. Refer to Ct.
