This is one pair of 1938 USA Pattern gaiters. They are made of canvas and have a webbing strap that goes under the boot. The buckle fitting is black painted steel. One edge of the gaiter has black printed etelets, the other edge has black metal hoops, There is a cotton bootlace tied to the gaiter. The colour is jungle green. A pair of United States Army drab canvas gaiters, worn with shoes or boots by US servicemen. The gaiters are laced with nine hooks and ten eyelets on the outer side of each, and fastened to the shoe by a webbing strap and metal buckle. History / Summary US Army drab gaiters of type M-1938, Dismounted, Protective, Stock No. 72-L-62027 – 72-L-62048, were issued in four sizes from R1 –R4, and worn extensively during the Second World War. Also identified as leggings.

Used by the cavalry in WW1. While horse riding they improved grip and lower leg stability and protected the rider against pinches and bruising. The man in the photograph is Arthur Edward (Ted) Child. The photograph is from the album of his daughter, Ivy Child. Ivy May Child (1910 – 1989) was the daughter of Arthur Edward (Ted) Child (1878 – 1964) and Ethel May Madden (1888 – 1970). Ted Child was the son of Matthew Francis Child (1839 – 1933) and Martha Jeeves (1857 – 1926). He was the grandson of one of the early pioneers Francis Child. Ivy grew up on the family property on Childs Road and took many photographs. Most of these are glued into her photo album. The album covered the years from c1927 – 1932. Ivy married Henry William Burgess (1906 – 1968) in 1944. The photographs remain in their original state in the album with individual copies made. This coat was part of the Presbyterian moderator's regalia which also consisted of a tri-corn hat, black bib, lace jabot, britches, silk stockings, gaiters and buckled shoes.Black wool, lined cutaway coat with a crew neck. The coat has seven pairs of black buttons and is secured edge to edge with a single hook and eye at the 4th and 5th buttons. It has lace cuffs, braiding and pleats at the back. The black lining is quilted at the top and there is a pocket on the inside right breast. The sleeves of the coat are lined with white fabric and the lace cuffs are secured with six pearl buttons. Leather riding boots were worn by the cavalry for their protection and endurance. Gaiters were also added to increase the protection and comfort. The jabot was part of the Presbyterian Moderator's regalia and was worn under the coat which had lace cuffs. The regalia also included britches, stockings, wool gaiters and shoes with metal buckles.
