The Royal Irish Rifles was a British Army Infantry Regiment. It dates back to the reign of King George 111. In 1793 the British Army raised 2 new Regiments to meet the commitmentd of the war with the French First Republic. In 1881 under the Childers Reforms these 2 regiments were amalgamated to form the Royal Irish Rifles,it saw service in the Second Boer War, Great War. In 1921 it was renamed the Royal Ulster Rifles. Quis Separabit = "Who shall seperate us" (Latin) In 1968 under reforms of the army, was amalgamated with The Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers and the Royal Irish Fusiliers to form the Royal Irish Rangers. This hat has the brand name or model, ‘The Solent’ which is the name of the strait that separates the Isle of Wight from mainland England. Boater hats such as these were mostly worn for informal occasions and were usually associated with sporting events such as boating and sailing, particularly in Britain. Hats of this type were also part of the school uniform of some Australian schools, usually prominent private schools with a British tradition, in the first half of the 20th century and there may be some schools still using the style today. This boater is of interest as an example of the informal head gear worn by men in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It will be useful for display.This is a cream straw boater hat with a flat circular crown and round brim. The straw is stiffened and plaited. There is a black material band ending with a black bow around the base of the crown. The hat has brown leather internal lining with a cream cord insert for altering the inside size of the hat. This navy officer’s hat has been reconditioned and this alteration may have been done for theatrical purposes. No information is available on its original owner or his country or rank.This hat is of minor interest as it is no longer in its original condition and has no known local provenance. This is a Navy officer’s hat with a white cloth circular top and a black material base and a band lined with black material. It has a Bakelite peak. The black band has an off-centre cloth badge of metallic thread featuring decorative feathers and a flag with a blue and red six-pointed star. The hat appears to be a re-conditioning of an original hat and the badge is probably not an original one. The edges of the hat are frayed and soiled.
