The compiler of this book, Carol Altmann, was born in Warrnambool and worked as a journalist for some years. She is the author of two other books and co-founder of the online magazine, Bluestone Magazine. ‘Warrnambool -This is home’ contains colour photographs of people and places that are favourites with the local residents. Some of them, such as the Aquarium, are no longer existing. This book is of some importance as it records the people and buildings that are well-known in the city and evoke fond memories for both those who live in the city and those who have moved away. The bed jacket, a woman's garment, is a waist-length robe worn to cover the chest, shoulders and arms while sitting up in bed. Its short length and cape-like cut allowed it to be put on (or removed) while in bed. This white fine lawn girls pinafore is an example of the dressmaking skills of the wives of the pioneer settlers and market gardeners of the Moorabbin Shire 1900. The pioneer settlers and market gardeners of Moorabbin Shire had to be self reliant and made their own clothing and utensils. Photograph of a painting by Mrs Fonce Kerr that was donated to Legacy. It was exhibited at the Legacy Widows' Arts and Crafts Exhibition in 1995. The article mentions Mrs Kerr was the ex-President of the Waverley Legacy Widows' Club. 'The picture is titled "Daddy's Home" and depicts the lower half of a serviceman dressed in khaki trousers and combat boots. Hugging his leg is a little girl in a blue dress. Words really don't describe the situation - seeing is better. It is a nostalgic depiction of considerable meaning to all members of our Legacy family - widows, dependents and Legatees. Mrs Kerr has generously presented the picture to Legacy - it will hang in the First Floor Dining Room.' Jim Wallace was born in Dumfries in Scotland and emigrated to Australia with his family at age 6. He arrived and settled in Marysville in 1922 and ended up working for the Barton Brothers looking after their touring cars and their garage. He met Marj in 1928 and they married in 1930. Jim and another well-known local, Clarrie Smith, had spoken about showing the 'talkies' in the local hall and then subsequently had local builder, Harold Cuzens, build the Marysville Theatre in 1932. The Marysville Theatre was located on Murchison Street. The solid concrete building was used as a Theatre from 1932 to 1970. The building was then purchased by The Darmody Family and was used as an Arts and Crafts Centre for two years from 1975. The building was then purchased by Norman and Rosemary Fiske in 1977 and converted into a restaurant called The Pumpernickel. This building, along with most of the town, was destroyed in the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires. "Desmond", on the Cockatoo Creek, on land which now forms part of Alma Treloar Reserve, was the home of the O'Hara family ca. 1910. The poet John Bernard O'Hara, used to visit his mother there, and remembered many wonderful holidays with the "city folk" who travelled to Cockatoo on "Puffing Billy" and camped along the creek.
