The swimmers were seated on the diving board over Jacksons Creek at The Nook, which served as a swimming pool in Sunbury until 1966 when the long-awaited for swimming pool was officially opened in Ligar Street on19th January 1966. For a number of years before the official opening townspeople organised many fund raising events to pay for the new pool. The blue and black printed ticket was issued and used for the 2nd & 3rd days of the 1973 Sunbury Pop Festival. The Festival as held on the property of George Duncan at Diggers Rest on the banks of Jacksons Creek. It was held over the 3 days of the Australia Day Weekend in January. The 'smiley' stamp on the back of the ticket was used as a "passout" check. The tickets were collected by Nicholas Hall who worked as a Security Officer at one of the gates.A blue and black cardboard ticket printed for the 1973 Sunbury Pop Festival. The words Sunbury 73 are in large block letters across the bottom of the ticket and there are four silhouetted figures - 2 male and 2 female. The statue is a bust of George Evans who settled in Sunbury along the Jacksons Creek and built a homestead which he named 'Emu Bottom'. The statue was originally erected on the site in 1986 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of European settlement in the area. A time capsule was buried at the base of the statue and was lifted and opened in 2011 when the 175th anniversary was celebrated. The photograph was part of a collection from a photograph competition organised bye the Sunbury & District Heritage Association in March 2001. It is a view of the former vineyard growing area in Sunbury which was situated along Vineyard Road. One of the remaining vineyards is visible in the photo. From 1860 to the early 1900s many vineyards were operating in Sunbury. The former mill and weir shown in the photograph were sited on the banks of Jacksons Creek downstream from the town of Sunbury. John Eadie, a Scottish immigrant established the water-driven flour mill on the banks of the creek after he arrived in the colony in 1866. The mill continued operating until the outbreak of World War 1 when the metal wheel and iron roofing were taken and used for the war effort. The hill in the back ground with the trees and buildings was the site of the former Sunbury Asylum. George and Anne Evans settled in Sunbury in 1836 after migrating to Van Diemens Land from Plymouth in 1825. He took upland along the Jacksons Creek and built his Emu Bottom Homestead. He married Anne, who was forty years younger than him on 11 May 1843 and they had six children. He and his wife Anne are buried in Melbourne General Cemetery in Compartment 'H'.George died on 26 August 1876 and Anne died on 12 January 1893. George Evans was a one of the first Europeans to take up land in the the area that was originally known as Buttlejork ( Batterjork) in the area now known as Sunbury. John Eadie, a miller from Perthshire in Scotland, established a water-driven flour mill on the banks of the Jacksons Creek downstream from the Macedon Street crossing in 1861. He also built a weir and water-race to ensure there was plenty of water to drive the mill. The mill produced flour until the early years of the twentieth century. In 1914 the large shell and the iron roofing were removed to aid the war effort. The weir can still be seen but the ruins of the mill are the only evidence of its early existence.Milling was one of Sunbury's early industries in the early days of European settlement. The sign was erected in the reserve in November 2015. Leo O'Brien was a long time Sunbury resident and the son of Terence O'Brien, who farmed in the district. The reserve is on a section of land that Leo owned, which fronted Barkly Street to the west and Jackson Street to the east. As Sunbury developed the higher section of the property was subdivided for housing and today Terence Street is in that subdivision. The Leo O'Brien Reserve area could not be developed for housing because that land is part of the former main drain, which was a natural waterway that flowed through a part of Sunbury an entered Jacksons Creek at the end of Brook Street. Today the open drain is covered over. Terrence O'Brien served as Shire President on Shire of Bulla Council during the first two decades of the twentieth century and was also a member of the Sunbury Waterworks Trust from 1913 - 1914.A coloured photograph of sign placed at the entrance of a small open space. The two homesteads are Ben Eadie and Craiglee, which were two of Sunbury's earliest vineyards that were established in Sunbury. James Stewart Johnson designed and built his concrete home, Craiglee, in 1865 where the previous year he had planted out his vineyard on the surrounding 26 acres of land.The property was on the east side of Jacksons Creek on Macedon Road. He concentrated growing Riesling and Hermitage grapes. After his death in 1896, his son Wilfred continued to produce wines until the late 1920s, when he pulled out the vines and concentrated on raising sheep for wool and meat. The Carmody family purchased the property in 1961 and in 1976 decided to replant the vineyard. Ben Eadie was built some time in 1863 and settled by the Eadie family who also were millers. The winery was built into the side of a hill close to the house but the Eadie family tended to concentrate on milling and retailing.In the earliest days of European settlement many wineries were established in the Sunbury area.Two non-digital sepia photographs have been mounted on cardboard. The Eltham Roads Board was established in 1856. This is a unique significant record of early settlers in the Shire of Eltham. One of 6 early rate books. This is among the oldest items in the EDHS collection. An article in the Eltham and Whittlesea Shires Advertiser Friday 21 Nov 1941 Page 5 titled: District's Early History states: "The first rate book which is still in existence at the Shire Office is for the year ending October 14, 1858 and is probably the best record possible to indicate the development of the district. At the time properties were rated as follows: Cultivated land. 6d. per acre; pasture land, 1d. per acre: estimated annual value of buildings, etc., 6d in the (pound). The total amount of rate recorded for the year was (pounds)153/14/8.
