Ceramic - Artwork - Ceramics, "Four Part Triangular Form' by Kingsley Marks, 1984, c1984
Kingsley MARKS (1929 - ) Kingsley Marks trained at the South Australian School of Art before teaching secondary schools. He became interested in pottery after attending a class one night a week at the John Martins building in Adelaide. He received grants to travel and study ceramics in Mexico the US and Canada, then taught for twenty years at the Torrens and South Australian Colleges of Advanced Education. Upon his retirement in 1985, he moved to Brentwood near Minlaton and established the Brentwood Pottery, specialising in sculptural work using a range of forming, decorative and firing techniques. (https://www.flickr.com/groups/1281707@N21/discuss/72157641492795284/) Kingsley Marks was a guest at Strezleckie Spotkanie in 1984. This work is part of the Jan Feder Memorial Ceramics Collection. Jan Feder was an alumna of the Gippsland Campus who studied ceramics on the campus. She passed away in the mid 1980s. Her student peers raised funds to buy ceramic works in her memory. They bought works from visiting lecturers who became leading ceramic artists around the world, as well as from many of the staff who taught there.Electric kiln-fired slipcast decorated earthenware. Ceramic - teapot, Dianne Peach, Slip Cast Teapot by Dianne Peach, 1983, 1983
In particular I have been using these methods of construction [slab] to interpret the traditionally spherical form of the teapot as a cubist painter might by squaring it up and transposing curved surfaces into planes and angles. These geometric versions provide flat surfaces for pattern making and light reflection, and the objects become increasingly more decorative than functional. I find enormous pleasure in bending convention to the verge of impracticality. But not so radically that l miss the challenge of producing a form that still incorporates most of the elements of a properly functioning teapot, such as the height of the spout to the pot, the ease of filling, emptying, and handling. Surface decoration plays a vital role in reinforcing the abstraction. Bold areas of black underglaze are applied with distinct boundaries dictated by the form’s angles and planes. In pairs or ad hoc groupings the teapots react with each other and the spaces between to present complex geometric patterns. High firing produces a dense, almost vitrified body and the surface quality I admire without the need for glaze. Although some with more functionality may be glazed inside.(http://www.diannepeach.com/, accessed 23 July 2021)Dianne PEACH (1947- ) Since being introduced to pottery by Milton Moon and David Smith in the mid 60s Dianne Peach initially focused on wheel thrown functional war, which expnded include the infinite possibilities of slab building and casting. This work was purchased from the "Fresh Clay' Exhibition in 1983.Electric kiln fired slip cast earthenware teapot with stencils and coloured glazes. Photograph, Daniel Robertson Australia Pty Ltd, 2014
Englishman John Robertson was a roofing contractor and importer of slate. He founded the Daniel Robertson company in 1835 after arriving in Australia on a ship that carried a large quantity of slate as ballast. This slate was soon seen on the roofs of important Melbourne buildings. In 1910 the company began producing concrete roof tiles in South Melbourne, and in 1928 they converted the Tunstall Brickworks to produce terracotta tiles. In 1967 Daniel Robertson's produced a unique rustic range of bricks that were such a success that the roof tiles were phased out in 1969. In 2013 Daniel Robertson Australia Pty Ltd closed. These 2014 photographs show the buildings and some products still on the site at the time.13 coloured photographs of the office, storage and kiln areas at the Daniel Robertson site in 2014.
