Hammer and 2 Knives/Cutters
Wandin Thomas Sebire JP (1867-1960) learnt boot-making as a young man. In a small workshop on his property in Sebire Avenue, Wandin he made boots for family, friends & neighbours. He also repaired boots & made other small leather articles. Bootmaking is a complex process requiring a variety of tools. The leather is cut to shape, glazed & burnished (polished) with heated irons. The pieces are stretched onto, & nailed to, a wooden last to form the boot. Once attached to the insole, the boot is finished on a metal last. Uppers are stitched with waxed thread through holes made with an awl. Heels comprise pieces nailed together & neatened with a heel shave. Metal plates, short nails or hob nails driven into the sole & heel, often in a pattern, improved durability.Cast iron hammer with a wooden handle. Larger Cutter/knife, cast iron with a wooden handle. knife and fork, Joseph Rodgers & Son
The Tabbara Sawmill was located at Brodribb River, at the lower Snowy River estuary. In the early 1900’s bow saws and broad axes were used to selectively log the forest. Ox driven carts pulled the logs to the Snowy River; the logs were floated downstream to the steam powered mill. The PS Curlip steamboat, transported the timber to growing townships, for schools, houses and farms. The mill closed in 1903. Tools, stainless steel pen-knife, 20thC
A penknife, or pen knife, is a small folding knife. It was originally used to describe a knife used for cutting or sharpening a quill to make a dip pen nib. Originally, penknives were used for thinning and pointing quills to prepare them for use as writing instruments and, later, for repairing or re-pointing the quills. They did not necessarily have folding blades, but resembled a scalpel or wood knife by having a short, fixed blade at the end of a long handle. Today a penknife can have single or multiple blades, and with additional tools incorporated into the design. The most famous example of a multi-function penknife is the Swiss Army knife A folding pen-knife with 2 stainless steel bladeson long blade end; STAINLESS / MADE IN / SHEFFIELDpen-knife, scouts, cheltenham, moorabbin, bentleigh, tools, early settlers -
National Wool Museum
Knife, 1941-1977
Knife used to puncture and retrieve wool samples from within bales. Knife was used by Maurice Dalton, who was foreman of the show floor at Dennys Lascelles (bow truss building) until his retirement after 34 years with the company (1941-1977).Wood handle with metal protruding from both the top and bottom of handle. Bottom of handle may be a 'rooster’s tale' as is common in a Farrier's knife (It is possible this knife was originally a Farrier's knife before being repurposed). Top of the knife is approximately half the size of the handle with a sharped edge which has dulled over time. -
