Certificate, Proficiency, Anaesthesia, 1906
At the time of issue, anaesthesia was a practice still in its infancy. Proficiency in anaesthesia was determined by successful demonstration of a small number of administrations. It was also built into the existing medical qualifications and not a specialty in its own right. Dr Montefiore David Silberberg completed his training at the Melbourne and Children's Hospitals and went to London where he was clinical assistant to Sir James Mackenzie and was associated with Sir Thomas Lewis who did ground-breaking work on digitalis and electrocardiography. When he returned to Melbourne, he brought with him the first electrocardiograph used in medical practice in Australia. He started working in Collins Street and at the Melbourne Hospital as a specialist in heart problems. During World War I, he served in Egypt in 14 Australian General Hospital 1914-16. In 1919 he was appointed physician to outpatients at the Alfred Hospital while also working at the Children's Hospital and at Repatriation General Hospital. He was appointed inpatient physician at the Alfred Hospital in 1925 and, at about the same time, a University of Melbourne Stewart Lecturer in Medicine. He mentored many young cardiologists during his lifetime, providing instruction at the hospitals where he worked and holding regular extra-curricula meetings at his home.Handwritten certificate from the University of Melbourne acknowledging the proficiency of Montefiore David Silberberg in the administration of anaesthesia. Document - Report, 80th Annual Report from the President 2003, 2003
Legacy celebrated its 80th year in 2003, David Ford was the president and was about to hand over to George Mackenzie. The president's report shows pictures from the special anniversary function at Government House, and many of the activities the widows are involved in. The report also recaps events through the year such as camps for the junior legatees, the schools Anzac commemoration and the public speaking contest. Up to the 1980s the annual report would usually contain pages containing the Presidents report and photos of significant events of the year. Between 1987 and 1990 these were published in a separate document called 'Highlights from the Annual Report'. This could be used in promoting Legacy in different ways, without all the financial information normally held in an annual report. In following years it became called 'Report from the President' then 'Highlights from the President', before becoming 'Melbourne Legacy Highlights' which was published twice a year from 2007. It was eventually renamed, 'The Torch, Melbourne Legacy Highlights' in 2012. 'The Torch' is still published twice a year. Other annual reports in 00027, 01095, 01096 and 01097, 01098, 01310 and 01311. The President's report was used to capture important events throughout the year and the activities Legacy provided for those in their care.Colour printed president's report from 2003 x 8 pages, with colour photos.annual summary, activities -

... Inc. History House 11 Mackenzie Street Bendigo goldfields ...This site was originally that of Cobb and Co's livery stable and although the Cobb and Co office in the Shamrock Hotel closed in 1886, the livery stable continued with the proprietors, Robertson and Wagner and Co. The site was bought in August 1898 by the Fresh Food and Frozen Storage Co, proprietors of the Bendigo Butter Factory. On this site the company built an ice tory, refrigerating works and cool storage for other businesses. The Bendigo Butter Factory was begun in 1894 in Lucan Street, opposite the distillery, by Mr McIntyre of the Rochester district. This site included a butter printer and Weigher supplied by Cherry and Son of Gisborne. In September 1895 the Butter factory was floated as a public company and was registered by Mr J H Curnow. However the factory was not financially sound at this point and entered into receivership in 1896. At this time it was bought by the Fresh Food and Frozen Storage Company of Melbourne and was placed under the management of James Cumming, an experienced dairyman. The company had previously appointed him as their inspector of creameries. By 1911 he was the propietor of the Flora Hill Butter Factory. and was later killed in a car accident in May 1937. By 1919 the manager was Douglas Orson Oldfield (1868-1944) (NB at birth he was registered as Dugald and throughout his life he was also known as Dan).Colour photograph.
