Functional object - Stationary engine
This engine has a blue green casing and has been made portable as it is mounted on a tray supported by four red metal wheels. It could be moved around the paddocks or sheds pulled by horses or oxen. There is no identification plate on the engine and there are no maker’s stamps or marks therefore it is difficult to name the company responsible for its manufacture. Engines like this were invaluable on farms to operate threshing and milling machines, pumps, saw benches, hay balers and chaffcutters, among other things. This engine is currently attached to a chaff cutter. The value is also in the fact that it has two belt drive wheels so could be used to perform two different operations simultaneously depending on available horsepower.Blue green casing; two belt drive wheels; red wheels. Functional object - Box spanner
This box spanner was used in the early twentieth century to tighten the hubcaps on wire wheels. These were the standard wheels for early models of cars, as the quick detachable hubcaps meant they could be changed quickly. Although they were later replaced by the development of the cheaper pressed steel wheels in the 1920s, their lighter weight meant they were still used on luxury cars. This spanner was manufactured by ‘Wire Wheel Corporation of America’, also known as ‘Houk Manufacturing Company’, who were making wheels in Buffalo, New York, from 1910.Box spanner for wire wheels; tapered handle, hanging loop other end to spanner. surface rustWire Wheel Corp of America Buffalo NY B4-1005/H4.B4.CB4.CB4 5 Abox, spanner, tool, tools, churchill island, farm -

Spinning Wheel, Charka spinning wheel
Part of the Zakrzewski Collection of spinning wheels donated to the National Wool Museum by Mr Wlodzimierz Zakrzewski. For many years, Mr Zakrzewski collected, researched and repaired spinning wheels from all over the world. This spinning wheel is known a Charka spinning wheel and is from India. Spinning wheels like this became widely known through their connection with Mahatma Gandhi and are often referred to as Gandhi wheels. Gandhi encouraged people to spin whenever they had the opportunity. He especially advocated their use to India's poor as a means to achieve self-sufficiency and thus combat the growing poverty rate in India after the departure of the British.Charka or Gandhi spinning wheel. Wagon, Explosives, 1900s
18½-inch (460mm) gauge wagon came from the Commonwealth Explosives factory at Maribyrnong in Melbourne’s western suburbs. It has gun-metal wheels, as avoiding sparks was understandably a priority in an explosives factory. It also has water tanks to drip water on the wheels as an added precaution Historic - Industrial Narrow Gauge Railway - Commonwealth Explosives factory, Maribyrnong, Victoria, AustraliaExplosives Wagon - Four wheel wagon with timber frame, copper water tanks and bronze wheels.explosives wagon, puffing billy, commonwealth explosives factory, maribyrnong explosives factory -

Pulley wheels
The three metal pulley wheels, two larger one smaller, were possibly used in the mechanism associated with the operation of the clockwork weights that helped to turn the light in the lantern room between 1913 and 1975. If this information is confirmed, the wheels have first level contributory significance for the insights they provide into the technology and operations of a late nineteenth/early twentieth century lighthouse.Three pulley wheels, two larger one smaller. -

Tools, Wagon Wheel Spanner c1900, c1900
Among the early settlers in Moorabbin Shire were blacksmiths who made tools for the other settlers who were establishing the homes, market gardens, farms, orchards and various businesses. Early settlers were self reliant and repaired their own equipment for kitchen, dairy, farm, horses, wagons, carts using various tools . These large spanners were used on a horse-drawn wagons, carriages, stagecoaches, and carts. A wheelwright would use this tool to make or repair the wheels.
