William Frank Rouden Budge "ED"No VX48105 enlisted in the 2nd AIF on 23.7.40. He served in the Seige of Tobruk and El Alamein where he was the Commanding Officer of his Battalion during its early days. He was WIA twice , at Tobruk then Alamein losing his left leg. At discharge from the Army on 7.1.47 he was a Major in 2/24th Aust Infantry Battalion. The Greek Commemorative War Medal was instituted by Royal Decree on 19.8.1947. It was awarded for service from the outbreak of war in Greece 1940 to the fall of Crete in 1941. It was also awarded to allied foreign troops who saw service as per the areas covered on the reverse of the medal. This medal was awarded to Alan Kenneth NAISMITH DCM, VX4838, 2/7th Bn. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the coronation of King George V, a commemorative medal awarded to citizens who had made contributions to their community, as recognised by their local council. Sleigh in 1855 as The Daily Telegraph and Courier. The coronation of Queen Elizabeth II as monarch of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Union of South Africa, Pakistan, and Ceylon took place on 2 June 1953. Commemorative medal made for the 1897 Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Two portraits of Queen Victoria on the face, one as a young girl, the other an older, veiled woman. The medal originally had the words "Queen Victoria's 60th Year of Reign 1837 to 1897" around the perimeter of the face, however the medallion is so worn that the words are barely visible. The reverse has the Australian Coat of Arms, within a diamond shape. The words "Diamond Jubilee / Australia's Celebration" are around the perimeter (barely readable due to wear). A small crown is above the Coat of Arms and the date "1897" is below it, these are also barely visible due to wear. The medallion appears to have been of gilt plate, however only small areas of gilding are left on the reverse side. In 1919, Australian schoolchildren received a special commemorative medal to mark the end of World War I. This medal, known as the “Peace of 1919” medallion, was issued by the Defence Department and distributed to schoolchildren throughout Australia. The medallion is circular with a plain edge and an integral suspension loop. On the obverse side, it features a symbolic female figure of Peace, holding a sword and standing on a plinth marked “PEACE 1919.” A dove flies behind her, and two figures freed from shackles are at her feet. The reverse side showcases a central panel surrounded by laurel leaves, topped by the King’s Crown with the word “VICTORY” over rays of the rising sun. A sailor and a digger stand at ease on either side of the panel, which bears the inscription “THE / TRIUMPH / OF / LIBERTY / AND / JUSTICE.” Below the leaves, a small panel displays the words “THE PEACE OF 1919” and the manufacturer’s name. The medallion was issued to commemorate the signing of the Versailles Peace Treaty in 1919, which officially ended World War I. Originally, the medals were suspended from a narrow piece of red, white, and blue striped cotton ribbon. This medallion served as a reminder to a generation of the service and sacrifice of Australians during the war. It symbolized the achievement of peace, albeit at great cost. Medal issued to celebrate the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911. George ascended the throne on his father?s death on 9 May 1910. During his reign, which spanned World War I, the royal house abandoned the title the house of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (or the house of Hanover or Brunswick) and became known as the house of Windsor. George died in 1936, and was succeeded briefly by Edward VIII. Different versions of this medal were produced for the states. Longmore set aside his life as a farm-hand in Geelong, Victoria, when he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at age 21. Private (Pte) Roy Longmore, 3rd Reinforcements, 21st Battalion, of Bannockburn, Victoria enlisted on 13 July 1915; and he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Anchises on 26 August 1915.[2] After training in Egypt, was sent to the Battle of Gallipoli where he was a tunnel digger with the 2nd Division, burrowing underneath the Turkish positions and laying mines. After evacuation from Turkey, he fought at Pozières, Armentières, and Villers-Bretonneux.[1] He was wounded three times in France and was momentarily given up for dead when he was shot as the Armistice in November 1918, approached. He later recalled, "We were patrolling in a gully when suddenly half a dozen Germans appeared over a hill armed with machine guns and opened fire. Jerry riddled me, knocking me flat on my back, and the last I heard was 'Longy's had it, they got him.'" Fortunately, his fellow soldiers saw him move and rescued him.[3] Lance Sergeant (LSgt) and returned to Australia on 16 March 1919 as a member of the 2nd Pioneer Battalion.[2] Civilian life[edit] After returning to Australia in 1919, his injuries made returning to farm work impossible, so he drove a taxi in Melbourne. Another change caused by the war was more telling. Before, he had hunted rabbits; but he later explained that when he returned home, he no longer had an appetite for firing at anything alive.[3] Longmore married and had one son, Eric.[1] The one-time LSgt Longmore died peacefully in his sleep at a Burwood Nursing Home aged 107 on 21 June 2001. He was the second last Anzac to die.[2] At his death, Australia honored him one final time with a state funeral.[3] Australian "legend"[edit] In 2000, Longmore was recognized as one of the "Australian Legends." His name and photograph were honored as part of an annual series of commemorative postage stamps issued by Australia Post since 1997. The stamps commemorate living Australians "who have made lifetime contributions to the development of Australia's national identity and character".[4] Longmore lived to fully enjoy this honor.[3] Longmore's 45-cent Legend stamp displays the soldier's portrait as a young man, photographed just prior to his departure for Gallipoli. Formal photographs of the other two ANZAC centenarians complete this stamp set.
