Alistair Clark ..."Glenara' was the home of Alistair Clark who lived at Bulla which is situated about 20 kms NW of Melbourne in the Deep Creek valley. He was born there in 1864 and lived there throughout his lifetime until his death in 1949. His father established the property during the mid-nineteenth century. Alister Clark was a rose grower and created the very popular 'Lorraine Lea 'rose along with other famous species. A rose garden has been established in the township of Bulla in his memory. He was also an active member of the Victorian Racing Club. The original photograph was published in the Melbourne 'Herald' on 20 August 1952 on page 5.Alistair Clark was a prominent rose grower and developed many rose species which were suitable for Victorian conditions. The homestead is a good example of Victorian architecture built in Victoria in the latter years of the nineteenth century. The house has a heritage listing in the City of Hume Heritage Study.A black and white photograph with a fine white frame, of a Victorian homestead with a a verandah across the front of the house. Dysons first collection of poetry, Rhymes from the Mines and Other Lines, was published in 1896 by Angus and Robertson. A second poetry collection Hello, Soldier!: Khaki Verse was published in 1919. Many of these verse were originally printed in the “Bulletin,” others in “Punch,” “The Leader” and Melbourne “Herald.” The book we hold at the RSL is the original edition and is No. 146 in our museum collection. Dyson contracted encephalitis in 1919 He died at his home in the Melbourne suburb of Elwood on 22 August 1931. Although a highly successful writer in his day, Dyson has since been overshadowed by contemporaries like Henry Lawson and A. B. Paterson , and also by the achievements of his brother Will Dyson , one of the leading political cartoonists of the early twentieth century.Hardback rectangular book. For a time, he worked on the Melbourne "Herald ...The office of The Sentinel or Wodonga and Towong Sentinel newspaper was in High Street, Wodonga. The Sentinel began operation in 1885 and was owned, managed and edited by James Ryan. It was published weekly until he was killed by a train at Wodonga station on 27 July 1912. James Ryan was born in Beechworth in 1861 and served his apprenticeship with the printing business of the "Ovens and Murray Advertiser”. For a time, he worked on the Melbourne "Herald”, followed by the Ballarat “Courier”. With a fellow printer, William Oldfield Taylor, he moved to Wodonga and they began the "Wodonga and Towong Sentinel" with the first issue on 29th August 1885. Mr Taylor died in June 1894. After James Ryan’s death the “Sentinel” was continued by his son Charlie until his death 26 February 1965. It was sold to the Border Morning Mail in 1965.
