Functional object - China Pieces NEWTONS Hotel Natimuk
These pieces were likely used for dining at Newton’s Hotel in Natimuk. Hotels in the late 1800s and early 1900s often commissioned custom-branded china for their dining rooms. The custom branding and robust ceramic build suggest they were used for both everyday patrons and guests staying at the hotel. The Newton’s Hotel was likely a well-known establishment in Natimuk, serving travellers, workers, and locals. This image features several broken ceramic fragments that were originally part of dining ware from Newton’s Hotel in Natimuk. The largest piece appears to be part of a large serving platter or dish, while the smaller pieces belong to a cup or small jug. The china is white with a glossy glaze. Printed green hotel insignia is still visible on the fragments. The breakage pattern suggests these were once part of robust, every day-use hotel ceramics.“NEWTON’S HOTEL NATIMUK” is printed in green lettering on multiple pieces. The branding appears within a decorative ribbon motif, typical of custom hotel crockery from the late 19th to early 20th century. The cup or small jug also features a circular stamp with a floral design around the hotel’s name.china, glass, crockery, hotel, commercial item -

Painting - PAINTING, CENOTAPH FRAMED, 1988
Bendigo's Cenotaph by Dacre Smyth 1988. Bendigo's War Memorial in the city centre is a half size replica of the famous Cenotaph in London. Some 4-1/2 metres high, the Bendigo RSL President described it as the best country Memorial in Australia during its rededication just before ANZAC Day 1988 following its extensive refurbishment. It had first been dedicated in June 1957 and it is normally flood lit at night. It is not known for sure when the painting was donated to the Bendigo RSL but it was hanging in the Foyer years before the Soldiers Memorial Institute became a Museum in 1998. Frame - Light timber, gold trim, no glass. Original coloured oil painting of the Cenotaph, Bendigo in foreground with Charing Cross buildings & fountain in the background. Diary of Herbert Newton Lowe, Herbert Newton Lowe, March 1917 to February 1918
Diary covers the period from 9 March 1917 to 10 February 1918 on the Western Front. Lowe was later (Aug 1918) to be awarded the Military Medal for his actions on the Somme. Military Medal 'On the 11th/12th August, 1918, during operations on the SOMME, near PROYART, this man, just previous to the attack showed great devotion to duty in laying and maintaining alternative routes up to the front line, and after the attack had commenced he acted as linesmen, and throughout the operation, during which the lines were cut on several occasions, he went out under heavy shell and machine gun fire and repair the lines thereby enabling communication to be maintained and valuable information reaching Headquarters without delay. His splendid example inspired his comrades to volunteer to continue this most important work should he become a casualty.' Photograph, Laurie Newton (nee Young), Mont Albert Central School, c1956, 1956
Mont Albert State School was officially opened on 23rd April 1917. The school became Mont Albert Central School in 1918, taking in Forms 1 and 2. The school remained a Central School until 1964, when the secondary years formed the basis of a new High School, the Box Hill North High School, later to be named Koonung Secondary College. This is part of a large collection of material related to the Deakin, Mair and Young families, all with connections to Surrey Hills and Mont Albert. Laurie Young was the daughter of Beryl Mair (1916-1976) and Ernest Lance Young (1915-1999). The family lived at 5 York Street and later 11 York Street, Mont Albert. Laurie was born on 18 August 1947. Black and white photo taken of the school building from the path from Barloa Street. There is one large bush to the left of the path obscuring the side of the main building. There is a wooden fire escape at the far end of the building. The grass in the foreground is patchy."School" underlined in blue ink, centre top.
