Photographs – Old Tawonga District General Hospital Mt Beauty. Set of 19 colour photographs
... as well as other dedicated staff have provided high quality ...In the early stages of the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme the State Electricity Commission took over the financial and construction responsibility of the Tawonga District General Hospital building at a cost of 27,000 pounds. This included the removal and re-erection of the ex-military Bonegilla ward from Wodonga while in addition they carried out all the necessary building works that allowed the hospital to operate as a functional unit. The work was completed and handed over to the Hospital Committee of Management on September 1, 1949. Local residents raised 3,400 pounds through fund raising. The balance was met by the SEC and the Hospital and Charities Commission. The initial project was to provide for a basic temporary hospital which was later to include an Operating Theatre, Offices, Store, Mortuary and a Nurse’s Home, until the establishment of a permanent medical premises. Following the opening, 455 patients were admitted to the Tawonga District General Hospital and 254 operations were performed in the first year. The hospital relocated to Mount Beauty in the former SEC administration offices located in the town centre. Official opening of the 18 bed Tawonga District General Hospital was on April 29 in 1961. The old weatherboard building was demolished around the late 1900’s to early 2000’s and replaced with a new modern brick building. Alpine Health CEO Mr Lyndon Seys oversaw the opening of the new Mount Beauty Hospital in November 2001 alongside Board of Management President Mr Andrew Randell, other board members and politicians. The Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme the State Electricity Commission played a pivotal part in the planning and initial funding of the Tawonga District General Hospital, with a view to providing medical support for its many workers on the Hydro scheme. Later, spouse and family members of workers were also able to access medical assistance The hospital was originally located in Tawonga away from the majority of the patients as the Hospital and Charities. Many SEC workers and their families have received medical care at Tawonga District General Hospital and Alpine Health over the years. A number of family members of SECV workers as well as other dedicated staff have provided high quality medical attention and support in all the facilities as nursing staff, support staff and volunteers. Many past staff members and their families still remain living in the Kiewa Valley area 19 Colour photographs of the Tawonga and District Hospital situated in Mt Beauty circa 2000. Manufactured Glass, jar 'Resinol' ointment, mid 20th C
Resinol is used to treat several different types of skin ailments. Resinol was developed by Dr. Merville Hamilton Carter (1857-1939) in his private practice as treatment for his patients in Baltimore, Maryland during the late 19th century. In 1895, Carter, along with his brother Allan L. Carter and his cousin Henry Stier Dulaney founded the Resinol Chemical Company and began to mass-produce the ointment and other medical products. After over forty years of selling Resinol, the company had John H. Buffham & Co. as an outlet in Great Britain and was a successful global distributor. Henry LeRoy Carter Sr., the son of Dr. Carter, began running the company after the deaths of his father and other staff members. The company's sales began to decline in the 1940s, and after the death of Henry LeRoy Carter Sr. in 1951, his son Henry LeRoy Carter Jr. took the place of his father and grandfather as president of the Resinol Chemical Company. At that time, the company focused more on soap manufacturing, but continued to sell Resinol. For the rest of the 20th century, Resinol's popularity continued to dwindle. It was purchased by ResiCal Inc. in 2002.A clear glass jar with a metal screw top containing 'Resinol' antipruritic and sedative ointment. Console Telephone 10 shutter, circa early 1900s
This manual telephone exchange console is an important piece of equipment which provided the most efficient method of long distance communications in the 1950's to the 1980's. Communications were critical, not only for the regional Hospital, but also for large construction sites i.e. the Kiewa Hydro Scheme, especially if they are in dense rugged mountainous regions. The degree of Occupation Health and Welfare on industrial sites were at a bare minimum compared to the work scene after the 1980's.This telephone exchange console is highly significant to both the Kiewa Valley and Mount Beauty region because it was so important in the communications field relating to operational safety and work related controls. The success of any large undertaken relies heavily upon good communications. In the hospital this method of communications is still used i.e. patient to ward station. This flag system link a patient's room to the controlling nursing station. Identification of the patient needing help is crucial for swift action from the available medical staff. Similarly in large construction sites such as the Kiewa Hydro Scheme, successful instant communications was also essential. This switchboard required a 50 volt supply to successfully operate and was in use when both telecommunications and postal were under the one Federal Government carrier i.e. The Post Master General. A benefit with a line communication system (such as the one that fed this console was that interference from atmospheric conditions did not impede the connection. This console telephone switchboard (manual) unit has a shutter operation (precursor to the light indicator) to identify the caller to the telephone switchboard operator. This switchboard has a ten point indication shutter system allowing the operator to clearly identify where the caller is located. The console has a 44 connection point holes with their configurations in a triangular shape. The shutters are held closed by a small lever at the top which is opened by a small electrical charge from the incoming call. The operator uses a wind up handle to power a magneto connector(handle on the console's right side). The telephone hand set is located on the left side of the console. sec vic kiewa hydro scheme, alternate energy supplies, alpine population growth and communications -

Document - Folder, Margaret Stevens Nursing (Clinical Experience) Folder, 1981-1986
Margaret Stevens was the inaugural Head of Nursing at the Ballarat College of Advanced Education from June 1985 until her retirement in 1989. During the 1980s there was a growing acceptance around Australia that Nurse Education needed to be more science based to allow nurses to cope with the vastly increased appearance of technological devices in the hospital wards. The response was to shift such training into Higher Education institutions. The State Government decided that Nurse Training in Ballarat should move from the Hospital to Ballarat College of Advanced Education. in 1986. Margaret Stevens had been a senior Nurse Educator at the Ballarat Base Hospital for many years and was selected by mutual agreement between the two institutions to devise the new course and plan its implementation so that it would gain the approval of the Nurse Registration authority. In addition to consulting widely with other Nurse Education specialists and supporting departments in Ballarat College of Advanced Education, Margaret negotiated with over 70 medical establishments to work out arrangements by which the students would be placed in work experience as required by the course. She was also involved in the required additional staff appointments and in planning for a new building on Campus. The course was commenced in 1986 and the transition successfully achieved, thanks largely to Margaret's diligence. In 1987 the Review of Registration of Health Practitioners interim report was published by the Health Department Victoria. Margaret Stevens was appointed by the Health Minister to represent the College of Nursing, Australia. This was a landmark review with long-reaching implications. At the time of her death on 23 March 2015 she was a member of the Board of Ballarat Community Health, and was identified as follows R.N.; B.App.Sc (Nursing); Post Basic: DipEd(N); Kellogg Fellow (USA 1984-85), M.Ed.
