RDNS Sister Marilyn Smith is visiting the little girl in her own home to apply sterilized dressings, as ordered by a Doctor, to the wounds on her body. Visiting the child at home provides her with a familiar environment to undergo the procedure. The Trained nurses (Nurses) of the Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS), from its inception in 1885, provided wound care to their patients who ranged in age from the very young to the elderly. The patients required their wounds to be dressed following various types of surgery, accidents, burns, cancer, leg ulcers etc. As research developed better products and dressing materials, the methods and medication applied to wounds changed. MDNS received Royal patronage in 1966 and as Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS), the Education department developed wound care programs, such as the Leg Ulcer Management Program to provide their Trained nurses (Sisters) with methods of best quality care. They ran a program for Wound Care Specialists who made assessments and provided advice and support to the District Sisters working in the field as needed. The Sisters liaised with the patient’s Doctors and Hospitals to provide information on the progress of patient’s wounds and to receive any change of wound care from the Doctors. The photograph of the RDNS Clerical staff is taken in the Finance Department at Royal District Nursing Service ( RDNS) Headquarters, 452 St. Kilda Road, MelbourneWhen the Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS) was founded in 1885, Mr. L.C. MacKinnon was elected the first Honorary Treasurer followed by Mr. Lush. In 1889, Mrs. Margaret Maine took over the role and held the position several times over the years along with various ladies elected each year from the Committee. Ladies continued to be elected as the Hon. Treasurer when MDNS built the After Care Home and it became the Melbourne District Nursing Society and After Care Home (later Hospital). This continued until the separation of the two Divisions in 1957 with Mrs. F.E. Shillabeer the last Hon. Treasurer. Now, with the District Division becoming Melbourne District Nursing Service, later Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS), A.F. Cameron Esq. J.P. became Hon. Treasurer and held this role until July 1968. This lockable wooden inlaid box is part of a special bequest to the Mont De Lancey Museum of hand carved furniture and items made by Mr Franz Striezel by his grandaughter Mrs Dorothy Hilda Adamson. Dorothy was a friend of Nella Lord (nee Sebire). Dorothy passed away in 2007. It was to be known as The Franz Striezel Collection. Franz Streizel came from Germany in 1886 and was one of the three recognised craftsmen (Art Carvers) in Australia who contributed to the wood carvings in public buildings and honour boards throughout Australia. The National Gallery at their request had two small panels and a tobacco jar (some of his work), donated by Mrs D Adamson. They considered these pieces highly valuable.A lockable rectangular handmade lidded wooden box with inlaid patterned wood panels on each side and the lid. It has red velvet lining inside the lid and inner base. There is a lift our red velvet lined wooden tray. The lid is attached with brass hinges. A small red self patterned Collins Illustrated Pocket Classics novel The Caxtons: A Family Picture. It is very badly damaged with the spine coming away from the pages, loose pages and tears. Pages 3,4 and 5 are missing. The frontispiece opposite the title page is a black and white illustration of three well dressed men of the period standing talking in a sitting room. A few black and white illustrations are throughout the book. At the back are four pages of Collins' Illustrated Pocket Classics for further reading. Singer was first established as I. M. Singer & Co. in 1851 by Isaac Merritt Singer with New York lawyer Edward C. Clark. Best known for its sewing machines, it was renamed Singer Manufacturing Company in 1865, then the Singer Company in 1963. The Singer company began to market its machines internationally in 1855 and won first prize at the Paris world's fair that year. They had offices established in both Sydney and Melbourne by the mid-1960s. The company demonstrated the first workable electric sewing machine in 1910. Singer was also a marketing innovator and a pioneer in promoting the use of instalment payment plans, making their machines more affordable for many people. According to its serial number, this machine was manufactured in 1950 and was one of the new models designed to be more portable as it only weighed about 10 KG.This sewing machine is of local, national and international significance as it represents developments in technology and the impact this had upon the work of women.The Singer 99 was a sturdy and reliable machine that was easy to use. Lighter than other machines of its time, this machine weighed only 10 Kgs. It is mounted on a wooden base with a small compartment under the balance wheel to store accessories and bobbins. It has a 'Bentwood' (polished plywood) cover which also provided some room for storage. The machine is driven by a small electric motor and a light to illuminate the work area. It is decorated with gold decals and a filigree pattern. It includes a knee control which is inserted in a hole at the front of the machine.
