"They came into Port" Some second war sailors staged a surprise reunion with an old shipmate at Portarlington UC recently. Eleven ex-RAN men came from as far as South Australia to be with their friend, the Rev. Alec Hilliard, who is retiring. Mr Hilliard, orgained 32 years ago, celebrated a reunion lunch with the men after the service. The men served on HMAS Junee. Alec Hilliard was ordained 1953 at Warburton (where he was minister when the Queen visited the congregation). He served at Castlemaine 1957-66; Herne Hill 1966-80; Bellarine 1980-85. Princeton Seminary 1964–65, Toorak collegiate ministry 1965–69, Beaumaris 1969–1973. First superintendent Board of Local Mission until church union, then Executive Secretary Synod Coordinating Commission to December 1986, followed by Forest Hill and Cheltenham until retirement. President of Horton College, first Secretary of the Australasian Wesleyan Conference, President of Conference in 1857. Rev William Butters (1810 - 1887). Born Hibbaldstone, Lincolnshire on 24 January 1810. Entered the Wesleyan ministry in 1833 and sent as a missionary to Van Dieman's Land. Worked with convicts at Port Arthur, then served at Hobart, Ross and Launceston. In 1850 he was appointed to Melbourne. His health failed during the unprecedented difficulties initiated by the discovery of gold in 1851. Appointed to Adelaide 1855 - 1862. returned to Victoria in 1862, but his health broke down completely and he returned to England in 1863 and became a supernumerary. A founder of the Wesleyan Mission Carlton. President of the Australasian Conference in 1858. Born on the West Coast of Tasmania. Became a teacher inTasmania in the early 1930. He married Emily Ferguson, a presbyterian girl, but felt a calling to the Methodist Church. John went to Underbool in Vic in 1939. Joined the RAAF in 1942 and trained as a Navigator for Bomber Command. Was recalled in 1943 and began his ministry in the Woomelang Circuit, then at Mitiamo 1947-1950; Port Fairy 1950-52; Nathalia 1952-54. He left the ministry and bought a small farm near Bendigo. After 18 mths he started preaching at Mckenzie Street Methodist church with the title Pastor. In 1958 he was recalled to the ministry and served at Morwell. He was also chaplain to Morwell River Prison, Newport West, Coburg, Milan Italy and Finally at Moonee Ponds where he retired in 1978. After retirement he did supply work in places such as Sea Lake, Heathcote, Warragul and Quirindi NSW. John died on 25 July 2000. B & W photograph of Rev. Caroline Elizabeth Newcomb (1812 - 1874) woman squatter. Born in London and emigrated to Hobart Town in 1833. She went to Port Phillip in 1836 as governess to the children of John Batman. She met Anne Drysdale in Geelong and they set up a farming partnership. Caroline Newcomb joined the Wesleyan Methodist Society in 1839 and became the first secretary of the Methodist Church at Drysdale, founded in 1849. After Anne's death in in 1853 she continued to run the Coryule property. On 27 November 1861 she married Wesleyan minister the Rev James Davy Dodgson. She died at Brunswick on 3 October 1874.
