Griffiths established his butchering business during 1858, with just a small cash outlay, a canvas tent and a lot of courage. the business slowly grew and he opened a shop in Williamson Street in 1865. After becoming involved with a special history program at the Long Gully Primary School in 1984 as a guest speaker, Alan Crossley explained to the children the features of local goldfields and took them on several excursions highlighting the significance of the Long Gully area played in Bendigo's early growth. The school built up a collection of material of the long Gully area and the idea of a gallery was born. THe Trophy was discovered in a box of donated goods at the Druin Anglican Church Op SHop and was donated by them to the museum. A response to inquire in the local Leader newspaper established that the trophy was won by Les Pullyblack, who lived in Northcote. He would have been 18 or 19 years old when he won the trophy at Lilydale ANA Day Carnival. Les' great-nephews, Stuart, Mark and Brett went to school in Lilydale. The newspaper clippings have been collected for nearly 80 years, consistently, with a wide range of topics covered, all relating in some way to the deaf community.Thirty seven book, folders and boxes containing newspaper cuttings collected from July 1903 to 1908, 1922 to 1982 and 2002 to 2004. Articles related to the Victorian Deaf & Dumb Institution, Victorian School for Deaf Children, Deaf Children Australia, the deaf community and other relevant topics. The newspapers included are Melbourne, regional and interstate. Much of the collection was put together by the publicity officer of the time. A clipping service was used in the later years. Eric Boardman continued to print the Sunbury News after the death of his father, Arthur, and until the newspaper was taken over by The Regional Group in 1965.
