The portrait was commissioned by St Leonard's College in 1989. Mr Cornish sat for the artist in his office dressed in his cap and gown. Initially the portrait was hung in the main school hall, before being moved to the Cornish Campus in the mid 1990's.Richard Burnet Cornish was principal of St Leonard's College from January 1971 to October 1989. He was a dreamer, a driver, a doer and a visionary leader who purchased the land for Cornish Campus in July 1981 and presided at the official opening in February 1987. The bluestone church was designed by Ballarat architect Henry Richards Casselli, and constructed at a cost of 730 pounds. The church was opened on 18 April 1869. The Sunday School Hall was built c.1879. The church was closed in April 2015, and was subsequently sold. Glen Iris Presbyterian Church on the corner of High Street and Allison Avenue. The foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Mr R. G. Menzies and was opened on 21 November 1953. Newspaper Clipping from the ""Mail", 2-12-1997 P16. "Pupils put best feet forth"Pupils at Mullum Primary School took part in a Walkathon to raise money for their new hall. The school's 326 pupils walked about 2750 kilometres on a fund raising walkathon . Principal Rob Bloye said the event raised about $5000 for the new hall's heating and carpet. Mr Bloye said the $90,000 school hall would be finished by the start of the next school year. "The hall is a co-operative project, which means it has been fundfed by the community without any government grants", he said.

The hall was opened on 20 November 1904 by Archbishop Thomas Carr and the following January the Sisters of St Joseph took charge of the school. The Gipps Street Wesleyan Methodist Church of 1874 and the adjoining school hall, were built in the Collingwood Flat area - one of the municipality's poorest areas. In 1903, the Collingwood Methodist Mission was established with its headquarters in the Gipps Street Church. Six Methodist Missions were created in inner Melbourne. Three churches were operated by the Collingwood Mission. They were: Sackville Street Collingwood, Elizabeth Street, North Richmond (demolished), and Gipps Street Collingwood (demolished).
