The photo, by an unknown photographer, shows tram 38, decorated for the 1954 Royal Visit in a Ballarat street - possibly Victoria St. The tram has the destination of City. Could be by a Sydney based photographer who did this type of captioning on his photographs. The photograph shows Geelong No. 2, built by Duncan and Fraser of Adelaide in 1911 in its as-built configuration, c1920 at the Wharf terminus, known as the Moorabool Street Pier. The tram line was opened in 1912 and closed in 1940 when the track in Corio St was extended to the Beach terminus. There are a number of horse-drawn vehicles in the view with goods being loaded or unloaded on the ship moored on the right. The tramway was operated by the Melbourne Electric Supply Co. (MESCo). The photograph from the collection of Ken Magor was published in the Sydney Tramway Museum's magazine Trolley Wire in April 1981. The photo caption advises - "The steamship to the right is the Edina, a veteran Port Phillip steamer which was launched in 1854 and was not broken up until 1957." Wal Jack had an extensive range of correspondents throughout Australia and the world. This set are two letters from Alwyn Marshall of Toolamba, who travelled extensively. His first letter discusses tramways in Sydney, the type of trams in use, Brisbane tramways, NSW Railways on the Sydney to Brisbane line, Queensland railways, the Sandy Hollow line and the wooden trestle bridge near Nayook. He used a motor bike for his Australian travels. Last page of a report by the Railways Standing Committee 1902. recommends that the State (Victoria) obtains possession of the tramways - looks at the situation in Sydney. This list, c1950, provides a list of Sydney tramcars up to R1 1987 in passenger service by class with their allocated numbers - prior to the construction of the last 100 R1 class cars.
