One of the last trams No 18 to run up Main Street of Long Gully (Bond Street) Now known as Eaglehawk Road. On Left - Post Office - now Gents Hairdresser & Rose of No 3 Australia Hotel. On Right - Les & Marie Norris Newsagency & Mixed Business. 2 story building was Commercial Hotel. No 26 Tram was the last to run between Bendigo, Long Gully & Eaglehawk. Still running as a Tourist. Donated by Alan Crossley. tram in Bendigo 1987 1985. On the other side is written: One building has already been demolished and the proprietor of the Newsagency & mixed business Mr. L W Norris, will also demolish and rebuild further back from the road in preparation for eventual re-alignment of the Long Gully bend by the Country Roads Board. The Board declared an alignment some years ago for the corner - a severe traffic hazard - but, the assistant Divisional Engineer, Mr G Marshallsea said yesterday the Board had no immediate plans. Shows the view along Bridge St with the Nicholl and Allan store, Bucks Head hotel, Reed Chemist and C. Morris Hatter sign. C1895? Has a number of people in the view. The photo is of Sturt St showing Town Hall Ballarat Vic, looking east towards Grenville St from Doveton St. An ESCo tram is in the far distance. In the view are Stansfield and Smith, Snows, and the Bucks Head Hotel. On the left can be seen Shoppee's Square marketplace tents. Photo is very similar in location to item 7364, a later version of this Rose Series photo with the same number 1712. The photo shows a view looking north from Lydiard St South with a tram in the far distance. Rose Series P1766. In the view are the buildings of Thiessen & Irvine Auctioneers, Franklin Chambers, Craigs Hotel, and the Post Office. The Franklin Chambers Building with its Art Deco front has been refaced since this photo was done. A Nestle truck can be seen on the right side of the photo. On the rear, Wal Jack in a note to Ken Magor has written "4 wheel tram bound for Sebastopol in Lydiard St Nth and about to turn into Sturt St (left). Photo taken from Lydiard St South, about late 1940s". Based on the cars in the photos, probably more 1940/41 See item 8978 for a similar image by Rose.
