Vase is a Japanese brass 30mm anti-aircraft shell case with a 1938 Territory of New Guinea silver one shilling coin affixed to the side of the shell case. the top of the case is slighltly splayed to form a decorative lip. Either side of the case are two Australian .303 spent cartridges vertically mounted and attached by two further cut-down .303 cases. The vertical cartridge cases have bullets insertedThe 30mm case has several Japanese characters on the base, naval anchors and the English S4/17 The .303 cases are marked M6 VII 1942 -

Presumably souvenired by an Australian serviceman during World War ll. These used brass cartridges have been lightly etched or engraved with typical New Guinea designs and the lettering "LAE" and "1943-4". The type 96 was a Japanese built variant of the French Hotchkiss 25mm anti-aircraft gun. The type 96 was designed as a dual-purpose weapon for use against armored vehicles and aircraft, but was primarily used as an anti-aircraft gun in fixed mounts of one to three guns on Imperial Japanese Naval vessels.The cartridges are engraved with typical New Guinea scenes and the word "LAE", one has the date "1943-4". -

These are examples of trench art having been engraved with floral patterns... of trench art having been engraved with floral patterns ...A set of two spent ammunition rounds complete with projectile, which are souvenirs of World War 1. These are from the 1 inch Nordenfelt machine gun, the projectiles are made from solid steel with a brass jacket, have an exposed steel tip and have a groove near the base. Both the brass cartridge case and the projectile are highly polished and have been chromed (?). These are examples of trench art having been engraved with floral patterns and the words "to Fred from NL". These items were owned by Frederic Harley MM, s/n 910, a WW1 Artillery Gunner in the 36th Australian Heavy Artillery Group who served in France. He enlisted in Frankston and lived in Frankston after returning to Australia. Further details of the Nordenfelt MG are available, refer AWM < http://www.awm.gov.au/collection/RELAWM10737.005/ >One of the cartridges has the following stamped on the base: "RɅL" or "R↑L", "1884" and "lV" image "DɅD" or "D↑D" -

The handle for the letter opener is made from a discharged British or Australian MK VII .303 calibre rimmed cartridge. The blade of the letter opener is attached to the handle via a bullet which has been sliced through the middle HMAS Uralba was an auxiliary minefield tender and armament stores carrier operated by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) during World War II. She was launched in 1942 by Ernest Wright, Tuncurry, New South Wales as Uralba for the North Coast Steam Navigation Company. Requisitioned by the RAN while under construction on 13 July 1942 and commissioned on 22 November 1942.
