On 18 June 1853 the 839 ton ship 'Earl of Charlemont' was wrecked near Barwon Heads. Her 450 passengers and crew struggled ashore without loss of life. Among them were John and Anne Morton, their 3 sons and 5 daughters. Before leaving Ireland, their eldest son George Pickering Morton had married Anne Eliza Burrowes. Their son, Thomas Richard Burrowes Morton, born in Melbourne 12 March 1854 was usually known as 'T.R.B.' Aged 26, he married Louisa Mary Esther Morgan. In 1909 Louisa Morton had a cottage built at Point Lonsdale and named it Dorrington, surname of her Welsh Grandmother. During previous holidays the family had stayed at the 'Terminus'. Wooden box inlaid on top and front with hard white material (unknown) printed with sprays of violets. Box has metal decoration: images of violets surrounded by metal edging, ornate corner scrolls. Written on piece of paper stuck inside box: 'The Violet Box. This box is a relic of Bendigo Survey Office where the Pinniger family lived from 1878 to 1890. The box originally belonged to a Mr. Black, who with Grandfather (T.W. Pinniger) and the others, Messrs. Allen and Turton, did the first geodetic survey of Victoria. Eric Boardman Collection The Bubeck family lived at Diggers Rest, Toolernvale Road. Felix Bubeck came to Australia with his mother, father and brother. Felix died in 1917-1918. Felix married Mary Ellen Seuling. Mary Ellen was born in 1861. Mary's father was a blacksmith at Keilor in 1858-1940. He is buried at Keilor Cemetery. This doily pair is typical of items of household linen in popular use in the 19th and early-to-mid 20th centuries. It was a tradition for brides to have a 'glory box' containing linen and embroidered and crocheted articles to take to their new home. In the Words of donor, Betty Stone, … “These crocheted and embroidered articles cover a period of three generations- ie. Sarah (nee Chamberlain) Lees, Ann (nee Lees) Dale, and Daisy Elvena (nee Dale) Welsh. All three were accomplished needlewomen; also, both Sarah Lees (born 1844) and her daughter, Ann (b 1865) crocheted a wide variety of articles for use in their homes.
