Dwight James Baum is an American architect. He was born in 1886 in Newville, New York. As a young man, Baum moved to Syracuse. In 1909, he graduated from Syracuse University with an architecture degree. He worked for Boring and Tilton and Sanford White which are well known Architecture firms in America. Around 1912, he started his own residential design firm. During the 1920s, Baum designed a significant buildings and several houses in Sarasota, Tampa, Terrace, Temple and Florida all in the Mediterranean Revival Style such as the Ringlings dubbed Cà d'Zan, which is now known as the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. In 1923-1924, he also designed Sunset Hill for Mrs. Eugene D. Stocker at Warren, New York which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. During the Depression Baum became involved with Good Housekeeping Magazine as consulting architect, and as designer of their building exhibit at the 1933 Chicago World's Fair. His later work includes Hendricks Memorial Chapel at Syracuse University, with John Russell Pope in 1929–1930 and the pedestal for V. Renzo Baldi's statue of Columbus in the city's Columbus Circle. The papers in this work are focused on Thomas Brassey (1836-1918) who was born and educated in England. They include the period before he accepted the position of Governor of Victori, Australia, in 1895. During that time, he'd won a seat in parliament, which he held for 18 years, and for periods was a civil lord and parliamentary secretary for the Admiralty. He was passionate about the sea and addressed his naval and maritime concerns in public lectures, letters, pamphlets and books. He was also for a time lord-in-waiting to Queen Victoria and president of the Institute of Naval Architects. This book is from Flagstaff Hill's ‘Pattison Collection’, a collection of books and records that was originally owned by the Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute, which was founded in Warrnambool in 1853. It was edited by J. Porter, and published by Longmans, Green and Co. of London. The Longmans, Green and Co. was originally founded in 1724 in London by Thomas Longman under the name Longman. In August of that year, he bought the two shops and goods of William Taylor and set up his publishing house there at 39 Paternoster Row. The shops were called Black Swan and Ship, and it is said that the 'ship' sign was the inspiration for Longman's Logo. After many changes of name and management, the firm was incorporated in 1926 as Longmans, Green & Co. Pty Ltd. The firm was acquired by Pearson in 1968 and was known as Pearson Longman or Pearson PLC. Interestingly, the logo in some books, such as “Steam Turbines 2nd edition, published in 1922” has the year “1724” but the logo in books such as “Advanced Agriculture, published in 1894” has the year “1726” in the logo.The book is significant for publishing historical papers and addresses by Lord Thomas Brassey, former Governor of Victoria before Australia’s Federation. Brassey was passionate about naval and maritime matters in public and government capacities. The work is important for its connection with the publisher Longmans, Green and Co., of London, a firm that has been established for over two centuries, renowned for publishing encyclopedias, dictionaries, books on English grammar, textbooks, poetry, reference books, novels, magazines and more. The book has additional importance for its connection to the Pattison Collection, which, along with other items at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, was originally part of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institutes’ Collection. The Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute book collection has historical and social significance for its strong association with the Mechanics Institute movement and its important role in people's intellectual, cultural and social development throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The collection of books is a rare example of an early lending library and its significance is enhanced by the survival of an original collection of many volumes. This was presented to the Rev Yule on 22 February 1907. Alexander Yule was born in 1830 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland becoming licenced in the Free Church of Scotland in 1854. He came to Australia in 1870 where he became Minister of Erskine church, Carlton. In 1892 College Church Parkville was established by members of the Erskine congregation. In 1891 he was moderator of Victoria. Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries. The Percy Uebergang family lived at Tooram Park, Allansford from 1912 until 1992. Percy and Myrtle Uebergang's children were twins, Ray and Joyce born in 1926 who lived at Tooram Park until their deaths, Ray in 1986 and Joyce in 1992. Neither Ray nor Joyce married and following the death of her brother Joyce set up the Ray and Joyce Uebergang Foundation which supports the local community. Maryanne COUTTS (1960- ) Born Australia Maryanne Coutts studied at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA), The University of Melbourne, 1979 -1981, the University of NSW (UNSW),1984 and achieved a PhD at Federation University Australia in 1999. She has exhibited extensively throughout Australia and internationally including UK, Spain and Thailand and is currently Head of Drawing at the National Art School, Sydney. Dr Maryanne Coutts was the first successful Visual Arts PhD from the Federation University Arts Academy. She won the Portia Geach Memorial Award in 2007.
