The soldiers' settlement scheme operated after the first and second world wars in an effort to more closely settle the land and also give opportunities to returned soldiers. Crown land and other larger estates were acquired for the purpose. Most of these maps relate to the area north of Warrnambool where many of the subdivisions were parts of larger estates.These maps pertaining to the Soldiers' Settlement program, relate to an interesting part of Australian and local history. As such they have historic and social interest and significance.A collection of 25 paper maps which relate to to the soldiers settlement post World War 2. Some have details of the people allocated the land and some smaller maps have the printed details of the applicants requirements.Text is black on white paper which in some cases is quite aged. World War Two souvenir.This framed World War Two souvenir is an embroidered silk centrepiece. On a pink background, fringed in yellow, appear two red hearts in the top left and right corners. Inside the hearts, in yellow, are the words - 'To My' - 'Sister'. During World War II, over 22,000 Australian became prisoners of war to the Japanese. Most of them were captured at the fall of Singapore in February 1942 and were forced to march to Changi (the major Prisoner of War camp). Later on, the soldiers would be dispersed throughout South East Asia. Upon their return to Australia, very few of them told talked about their experience as prisoners (they often felt ashamed). It took almost 30 years before testimonies, books and documentaries would be published. This ship model was built by Australian prisoners of wars.Model of a Spanish or Portugese 18th Century sailing ship, manufactured from timber, fabric and string. Norma Lillian Henshall nee Sterritt biography (by son in law Rod Sharp) Norma was born on the 14th November 1912. She was a forward and independent child and always did what others would not consider appropriate at that time and you could say she was a hit of a rebel. Norma worked in Fairweather's in Pleasant Street and while she was there was taught to drive. She later drove Fairweather's Taxi being one of the first ladies to do so in Ballarat. Norma put her age up from 17 to 18 so she could get her license earlier and purchased an Austin 7 red sports car complete with a fishtail back. Norma taught herself the fundamentals of developing photographs and in 1938 rode her man's bicycle around Ballarat taking photographs of the various businesses decorated to celebrate the centenary of Ballarat. During the Second World War with her husband serving overseas in the Middle East Norma enlisted in the Army and served from 1942 through until 1945 as an Ambulance driver in the 3rd Ambulance and was stationed at Camp Pell which was located adjacent to the Melbourne Zoo. A number of Ithacan Greek men and Australian born men of Ithacan descent served in the Australian defence forces during World War 2.
