Ernest Lance Young was born 24 March 1915 in Surrey Hills, the son of Ernest Augustus Young and Ruby Nichell Whitty. He married Beryl Mair in 1939 and died on 5 October 1999 at Mont Albert. Electoral rolls record him as a manufacturer. His address after marriage was 11 York Street, Mont Albert. Beryl Mair (1916-1976) was the daughter of David Miller Mair and Lily Vipond Deakin. She had an older brother Geoffrey David (1913) and younger sisters Gwynneth (1918), Isobel Lillian (1921) and Shirley Inez (1928).This is part of a large donation of material relating to the Deakin, Mair and Young families, all of whom had connections with Surrey Hills / Mont Albert. The donor is the daughter of Ernest Lance and Beryl Young.Post card photograph with a stippled surface which has been cut in two and stuck back together but without the top RH corner section. Under the Large era the School saw a steady expansion of the Cadet Unit as well as the building of additional classrooms and boarding facilities, and the acquisition of further property. In 1956, the demand for day boy places had grown so much that, in the boarding numbers had to be drastically reduced to release accommodation for the greatly enlarged School which then had 650 students.

In October 1939, on the sudden death of his father, Headmaster Charles C Thorold, son, John Jeffery (J.J.) Thorold, a 26-year-old accountant and sole beneficiary and executor was suddenly responsible for 42 students. Numbers had dwindled during the Depression and the situation was so dire, J.J. put the School up for sale. Fortunes changed when the parent of a boarder offered financial support and together with the skeptical backing of Francis Wellington Were, father of J.J.'s step mother, Jessie, the School numbers grew during the war from 50 to 280. The majority of the newcomers were boarders and evacuees from northern Australia as well as England. J.J. adopted the title Principal and worked tirelessly to build the school. He briefly appointed Arthur Burnaby as Headmaster before his search for a permanent Head resulted with the appointment of Lionel Ashley Large in 1945.

Bob Hymans Collection Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans die on 7th July 2007. This Collection of documents and letters tells the story of Bob's endeavours to develop Falls Creek into the ski village it is today.This letter is significant because it documents the management of the Falls Creek Tourist Area in the early 1960s..This letter was written by the Falls Creek Area Management Committee to convene a meeting of Licensees in order to nominate two new members to the Committee.falls creek area management committee, falls creek administration
